What is the real population of the Shreveport ARK La Tex area. Is it over 500K. If so why doesn't Shreveport listed as such

Texas A&M Real Estate Center gives two different figures, based on the component counties of the metro area, for 1992-2002 and for 2002-2012 (the census bureau adds or subtracts counties every 10 yrs).

No, ima, just the 3 parishes in the Shreveport MSA

Caddo, Bossier, and DeSoto Parishes comprise the Shreveport MSA. I don't even think any Texas or Arkansas communities are listed in the Shreveport CSA. Shreveport MSA formerly consisted of Caddo, Bossier, and Webster Parishes but less than 25% of Webster Parish's population commutes to either Shreveport or Bossier City daily now. It's had to believe, however, since the traffic heading from Bossier Parish into Webster Parish in the evenings can be a real headache, as well as the traffic heading into Bossier Parish from Webster Parish in the mornings.

I agree that technically DeSoto should be in the MSA but practically speaking, aren't only the people living in Frierson/Stonewall true Shreveport suburbanites ?

Pretty much, yes... but despite Mansfield not really being a suburban area, a lot of people from there work in Shreveport as well. Mansfield is very poor and lacking in the way of jobs. There just aren't many people in DeSoto Parish to start with, and a huge chunk of those people don't work there. I think Mansfield makes up a good percentage of the DeSoto -> Shreveport commuters because of this.

Right you are, SBC. Harrison Co., TX (the first county into TX on I-20) is part of the Longview-Marshall MSA. Miller, AR part of the Texarkana, TX-AR MSA. All other bordering Caddo are non-metropolitan.

Have there been a lot of Shreveporters who've moved across the state line into Waskom, Texas (the first town on I-20 just over the La border) ? I agree that Miller County (Texarkana) is not in Shreveport's MSA, as you have about 50 miles of emptiness to drive through on US 71 between Shreveport's 220 loop and Texarkana's loop.

There are a lot of people in east Texas who work in Shreveport. I know quite a few personally who have moved across the state line, but many of the ones who work here are likely natives of that area. Our real estate guides, over the past few years, have been touting Marshall more and more as a "convenient commute" to/from Shreveport-Bossier. I find that surprising since it's actually in the Longview area.
