Post News, Louisiana Town Ditches 666 Area Code.

Reeves, LA (AHN) - Beginning January 2, the city of Reeves, Louisiana will no longer carry the mark of the beast. After 40 years of carrying a stigma for having the number 666 as its area code, Reeves starts 2008 with a new code; 749.

The only area codes in Louisiana are 318, 504, 225, and 337. The town of Reeves, Louisiana is in the 337 area code. The 666 code is a prefix, not an area code.

^ Seriously, I was about to say. Since when does Louisiana has an area code of 666?? I remember looking at an old phone book of New Orleans when Louisiana only had 2 or 3 area codes and 666 wasn't one of them.

@ these people for changing that bulls**t. This stupid ass superstitious is right up there with major buildings having elevators that skip from 12 to 14, as if having a thirteen floor listed really constitutes anything.

Give me a break.

Thanks for the clarification. I had a friend tell me this story over the holiday weekend and I had to debate because I knew Louisiana never had a 666 area code.
So it's a prefix. How did they get that prefix in the first place, that's what surprises me the most.

And why it took so long to get it taken off. If they objected to the prefix, that's their call; I just don't get why this became such an issue considering how long prefixes have been around.

Alright, I admit that I've been thinking about this. But consider something. The phone company changed the prefix from 666 to 749.

What is 74 times 9?

Coincidence? I'm thinking it's not. It's just too good.

B and B, what a great catch. I work in the telecom biz, I've just got to bring this into the office tomorrow, what a laugh this will get.

The change of the 666 prefix in Reeves, LA reminds me of US highway 666 in the western US that existed until about 5 years ago before finally getting the identity change completed.

End of historic U.S. Highway 666
