Thibodaux pro and con
Hi,
Just wanted some input about thib. and the area. Have alot of New orleanians moved into the area? Is it an affordable place to live? I grew up in New Orleans and still have family in the area. I am currently living in Fl. and would like to move closer to home but have pretty much ruled out N.O. and B.R. I'd like to get away from the traffic and other problems of a big city. My mom is living in Metairie so I thought Thib.might be a good place to look.
thanks.

Hi,
I was born and raised in New Olreans, and I've visited Thibodaux a few times (I acutally considered a teaching position at Nicholls State University in 2000). The city itself is rich with cajun culture, but it's very small, and very rural. I was looking for a place with a farily rich intellectual climate, so it really wasn't the place for me. But, if you're looking for a small town with lots of interesting culture, you'll probably love it.
Hope this helps,
Chris

hurricom,
Got your PM didn't realize you had posted here.....
where are you now?
I was asking about thib. because I have a friend there who likes it after she relocated there. i just am not crazy about the possiblity of a storm coming thru. Still, i have family and friends in the area so there is that draw....
I've been "talking" with the folks on the New Mexico threads and have gotten some info there. I'll probably visit there sometime in the spring.

I received a teaching position at LSU, so I moved to Baton Rouge, though I really miss New Orleans. I wouldn't worry about hurricanes. You'll have advanced warning before one comes, and there's always flood insurance

How do you like B.R.? i've heard different things from different people.... one cousin who lives there likes it,one hated it and moved back to n.o. area. i wonder about the cost of things in B.R. i.e. housing, with all the n.o. transplants. i do adjunct teaching in Fine Arts so b.R. and Hammond close by are a plus for me.
Yea, I know about the flood insurance but from what I've seen my mom go thru with insurance and the cost of all that going up, it gives me pause.....
i am hoping to find a place affordable so i can do my art full time and teach here and there.
BTW got your other Pm thanks

Thibodeaux is a large small town, if you comprehend what I'm saying.
It has allowed Houma to do all the booming. All the big chains have moved to Houma and Thibodeaux has elected to just host Nichols College as it's biggest asset.
I live in Houma and visit Thibodeaux frequently. I, for one, would not live in Thibodeaux. It is simply a bedroom town. People working in the New Orleans metro area commute back and forth. Honestly, there just isn't alot to do in Thibodeaux.
I recommend living on the edge of Houma, take 90 East/I310 to visit your Mother and have all the conveniences close by.
Hope this helps!
P.S. if you want you can visit a local website of the Houma/Thibodeaux area: http://www.bayoutalk.net
Post your questions of the area there and get answers from people that actually live in that area!
Good luck.

Thib. is very affordable. Persoanlly, I'm not exactly content living in Baton Rouge, mostly because I was born and raised in New Orleans. I'm basicaly a city kid, so Baton Rouge isn't a good fit for me. Ironically, Baton Rouge has much more of a rural mentality than you might expect. I expected a smaller version of New Orleans, and boy was I wrong. It really depends on what you're looking for, though. If you want to live in a very small town that's affordable, Thib is a good place. And, since it's near the heart of Bayou Country, it has lots of local color and culture. Hope this helps!

I think the mentality of Baton Rouge is beginning to change, as is evidenced by the new RiverPlace Condominiums tower, the Perkins Rowe urban village, etc. Baton Rouge definitely seems to be moving forward with a big-city attitude.

It is. For years, we had a poor selection of restaurants, and downtown was a no-mans land. This has changed recently, and it hasn't hurt that we got some of the more productive NO Katrina refugees - I fugure at this point, metro BR (EBR, Livingston, Ascension) has 650-700K.
