Default Deridder for ft. polk job?

Husband getting job at Ft. Polk. Not sure where to live. I think we are best suited to Alexandria becuase even though we love country and outdoors, we also love stores and restaurants! I am finding nothing to rent, except in Deridder. What is Deridder like? I know Alexandria is far from Ft. Polk and Deridder is closer, but will we die of boredom or end up in Alex every day anyway? Also, I have a dual enrolled sixteen yr. old and know nothing about the high school in Deridder. Can they dual enroll there as well?

Even though Alexandria is "far away", it's a straight shot in on LA 28, which is being widened. Plus, there are subdivisions springing up west of town in the suburban fringe/rural areas which may be more to your liking.
