I would recommend Shreveport over smaller areas. I've lived in the Shreveport area for all my life, 36 years and it's fine for a small to medium sized area. Ruston is really small, highly recommend Louisiana Tech University, Monroe has a good university that I know of and Shreveport has plenty of choices too for higher education. There are plenty of places to go shopping and eating, you can virtually eat out every night and have something new to eat each time. There are some places in town that isn't that safe to visit and you'll learn pretty quickly where those are. Driving, well I would recommend defensive driving, people are nuts here. Good luck on your decision.

Crime is bad in Louisiana in general, small towns and cities alike. Where you have much poverty, like here in Louisiana, it just goes with the territory. Minden has a problem in its ghettos, but is overall a very nice small city. In Northwest Louisiana Bossier is going to be your largest area with low crime. Vivian has a lot of drug-related crime for such a small town, but Oil City isn't bad... and it's only 10 miles north of Shreveport so the city convenience is good.

wow u really are trying to go small huh. hmmmm, The safest, most decent, and upscale nice small environment I know with great outdoors is Sterlington. You can have your own space, its very quiet, people look out for each other, and everything is laid back in the woods. there are quite a few hunter wholesale places along the hwy 165 and gas stations, other than that, u will have to go to Monroe or Bastrop for the major things. Bastrop..........Moderator cut: edit Only thing that brings people together is there Nationally ranked football team. Farmerville may be a wise choice, its a little bit like Sterlington, except Farmerville is a little bit more country and well established. Minden, I dont like Minden or Homer, its quite a few prisons out that way. I have a few cousins and a brother in there.Vivian is cool.
But come on now, you're coming from Memphis, u sure u want to downgrade to a very small country town. I personally think you seem like a Ruston type of guy, you should really look into it. It probably has the lowest crime rate amongst the other northern towns. I think you will like Ruston.

Look into Blanchard / Mooringsport area. Nice crime free area and only about 15-25 minutes to shreveport depending on where you locate. It's between Cross lake and Caddo Lake plus you're not far from recreation areas along I-20 in TX.

15-25 minutes from Shreveport? From the busy areas of Shreveport, maybe. Heck Blanchard and Mooringsport are basically low-crime, nice Shreveport neighborhoods they're so close to the city limits.

If I were you sir I would take a look at the Benton area. Benton is located conveniantly 11 miles noth of Shreveport and about 4 miles north of Bossier. There are two bodies of water that can be used for recreational purposes such as skiing and fishing. Also, the hunting is pretty good in Benton and the surrounding areas north of Benton such as Cotton Valley and Plain Dealing. The real estate is fantastic and the school system is supurb to say the least. The only crime in Benton are traffic tickets lol. Sounds like you would love Benton.

Yes, but we live in a small town of about 10,000 just north of Memphis. Its getting more and more crowded and along with all these people (Most from the ghettos in Memphis) come more and more crime. Trying to escape this...
We are now thinking of relocating to either North LA, southern AR or MS. Is there anything in north LA thats better than south AR or MS- does anyone have any experience with both N LA and S AR or MS and could compare? Thank yall for your your time and help!
