For decades and decades, I believe behind New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport, Monroe had the next best potential for growth. We have had the all the essentials and platforms for growth for years and years but somehow, we let places like Lafayette, Lake Charles, and omg Bossier City surpass us. We still dont have casinos, new skyscrapers, big economic developments, and yet we still have the best potential for growth. Bossier had those casinos and new apartments for over 10 years and just now reaching 60,000. Lake Charles got a new buildings and a casinos but still maintains about 70,000. Lafayette is next in line for the next best city in Lafayette, but ULM is a a far greater school than ULL and Monroe has historically made greater milestones than Lafayette who benefits mostly off Baton Rouge and New Orleans anyway. But Monroe has standed strong around with an average of 53,000 pop./180,000 METRO without the help of major companys, gaming entertainment, and zydeco (ha ha). Shreveport, great as they are, still comes down here to our events and schools. We got all original assets and natural beauty here in Monroe, and you guys know its true that if we had a fraction of the things u other parishes had, we would have been easily been a powerhouse because everthing is all ready setup. We were one of the first established cities in Louisiana with one of the oldest city transportation in the nation, First Delta Airline Flights, the very first place in history to bottle Coca-Cola. what did u other cities have that u didnt copy from New Orleans? Thats okay, the nascar track is coming, and Jindal is having promising talks to close the deal that Blanco couldnt close with the hybrid car factory at the old guide plant. New development with Restaurants and hotels on the river. There are 4 Condominiums between Monroe/West Monroe Downtown already. So u may laugh at this now but Monroe has been laughing for a century because u petty cities still havent made the important milestones such the ones that Monroe made. Watch out we coming!!!!

Monroe's downtown has potential, but it's not being utilized.

-Sidewalks aren't a problem, plenty of them
-Lots of vacant retail space that's potentially inexpensive
-The area does have a potential hipness about it...IF even a few hip people decided to live downtown
-Good place for restaurants (some TRULY authentic restaurant is already at the W. Monroe side of the Emden Bridge)

With a committed investment, downtown Monroe can revive. Memphis did the same thing to a section of its city called Cooper-Young. 20 years ago, that area was really crime-ridden, but with a little investment by the city government AND by committed common everyday people, it became the "hottest" area of Memphis. Even as early as the mid-90s, when I lived there, Cooper-Young's "cool" factor was well rising.

Currently though, the closest thing to "hip" Monroe has is the older section of Louisville Ave, where The Mohawk and Enoch's are (the Blue Monkey Tavern is just south of that area).

Not much right now, but it's a potential start.

So you mean to tell me if a professional racing track is currently being constructed, that wont be a great thing for all the thousands of racing fans who wont have to travel to Dallas or Jackson? "Hip"? What about between N.18th and N.19th where its almost like a second downtown with all the banks main offices is, fancy greek & lebanese restaurants, a few shopping strips on Avenue of America and tower drive, The Sage Restuarant, yoga places, like 4 good bars which draws large motorcycle gangs. What about Forsythe Avenue, Desiard past ULM where johnny's pizza house is, The famous Ray Pegees, The historical Waterfront Grill where all the WWII soldiers use to hang out at, Cypress Inn which sits on the Bayou, ULM sits on the bayou, hmm how many bayous does Texas have? lol, we are so boring, but there's a zoo here, and about 4 wildlife refugees. The Black Bayou is a truley amazing experience where you want see nothing like this anywhere esle in northern louisiana. Wait a minute, speaking of history, You been to downtown W.Monroe lately aka Cottonport district, where Antique alley is compared to a small quiet 3 blocks of bourbon street with bars and still in tact famous buildings? Behind that same street theres a new condo building overlooking the river. 2 blocks down is that great "truley authentic restaurant" on the side of the Emdon Bridge, Gabbeaux's Bale's Landing, sooo magically delicious food that taste so amazing. While you are eating some of the best catfish ever, you notice the calm river and the great downtown lights of Monroe wondering what a great city, I never knew.........

I mean think about it, what is Louisiana known for? Is it big tall buildings and fast pace living worry about wallstreet and fancy clothes? Its the ability to eat good, enjoying the true essence of life a family can bring, bald cypress and pecan trees everywhere, festivals, and football, and having a good time. The riverside Coney Island restaurant in Monroe epitomizes that with the live music on Fridays, big crawfish boils, the big tents you eat in, hahaha. Then walk to get a tattoo the infamous Tat2u which is the town markee tattoo shop. Afterwards go to the Blue Monkey, or The Top Gun, Enoch's, The Arena, The dejuvue, karoke bars. several clubs downtown(though are I go to mostly the Hip-hop clubs: Club Envy, Club Chris Styles, Club Dominoes, Club Dallas, Mandalay, and a few strip clubs.) Dont like any of that, not your style, then there is a fancy old building for rent every weekend equipped with antique chairs, beautiful architure and"chandalears"(um the crystal light thingys), You only see a place like this in those old western movies where all the rich folks go? One nite saw people partying on the room of that building where that old pink building use to be,(which is now been renovated and the whole building is a condo building now!!!).......whew, thats enough, im tired but I'll be back let all that marinate.........."hip"? please!!!!! Be sure to check out our Bayou Bowling and visit our many neighbor hood work out facilities!!!!!! And the garden district where the Biedenharn garden museum is. Dont forget about Masur Museum. Oh yeah the World War II fighter museum. The Civic Center stays pack, dont make a mistake and catch a good show, or rodeo, or monster truck show, or play, or circus, or repo sales. And dont get sick, we have a downtown full of medical facilities, you wouldnt want to get well wouldnt you.....okay....let me stop............Monroe haters, sheesh!!! Oh its so miserable hear that its so many super Wal-Mart sized churches that people spend all there money and time on and in? ....okay im done!!!! I got more you just bring it!!!! Dallas Cowboys LB Brady James, Monroe, Louisiana!! National Water Ski champs 6 time in the last ten years!!!!

Amen, little boy/girl blue, blow your horn to the Monroe beat. lol. New news, Monroe is in the process of building a new marina for boat traffic, construction has begun for a brand new bus terminal with multiple floors for parking. This was a gift from Washington D.C., awarding us for the excellence in enhancements to best public transportation in the state!! (Thats why we are the known for up here, just living, not buildings or casinos, just plain ole living and communities) Along with that, the city just bought a new trolley for the downtown area, this all happened under current 3-term mayor, Mayor Mayo (aka Mr. Haven't Done Anything great for the city?). Who esle in the state has a trolley besides New Orleans? Its okay if u name more than one, but notice where Monroe will be when u name all the citys who have one. Also, did you know about Natchitoches's horse and carriage? What about the Red River district in Shreveport? This is another update on Monroe's Establishments/Downtown as well as the whole Northern Louisiana, brought to you by the legend!!!!

P.S.: You guys wanna diss us, well go head, because im a member now and Im not afraid to speak up for my home and region!!! Im not a follower nor have I never been one to listen to the majority of what most thinks. This.........my dear Louisiana thread members....is an example of a strong intellectual, northern Louisiana cultural injected product typing to you guys with pride and heart. And until Monroe gets the proper respect, Northern Louisiana gets the proper respect, and the whole state of Louisiana gets its proper respect, in that same sequence............Louisiana's Legend will keep living up to his name and show u why im very deserving of it...............thanks for listening....now lets all shout!!! LOUISIANA MAYNE!!!!!! IIIIIIIIIII--YEEEEEE. (Whew, good things this not a essay for my classes, I really go crazy with all the run-on sentences!!! haha, enjoy)

You, sir, are definitely not boring.
So is the Monroe trolley going to be a bus trolley or light rail? Because Baton Rouge has a downtown bus trolley (nothing to brag about really but it exists nonetheless).
I love a good rail trolley or streetcar.
I heard some co-workers call the NOLA streetcar a trolley today, and I was like "How dare you call it a trolley!"
