Lake Providence-poorest Place In America

Also i read in a report the town has no parks, swimming pools, theatres, or even a Wal-Mart or a McDonalds
here is the other report as follows
the report also show the 2000 census show that the median household income in BLOC area 9903 which covers the southen 2\3 of Lake Providence and 3/4 of the population was $6,536 less than half the official poverty level of $14,764 for a family of four. later a Children's defense fund reported that in East Carroll Parish 71% of children under 18 are living in poverty- and this amid staggeringly high rates of infant mortality, teenage pregnancy and drug use
meanwhile, jobs are scarce, low paying and seasonal. for most of the year hundreds of families subsist on welfare:a single mother with one child gets $123 a month and a family of five $370 for hundreds the only available work is backbreaking minimum-wage jobs in nearby cotton fields
apparently this is the school house the children of the town attend
lake providence as seen from the air
is the Governor doing anything about this? I also read in a report circumstances like these is rampant throughout the state is this true?

It Just A Way Of Life
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS!
It’s so heart wrenching to know that after nearly 15 years later that LakeProvidence, La still holds the title of “The Poorest town in America.”
As I look at the photograph of L.P.High School, it begins to bring back memories and the personal emotions endured during that time of despair. The overwhelming support from the communities far and near were welcomed and greatly appreciated however, it wasn’t enough to replace our depleted dreams and the intangibles that we lost that cold dismal January morning of 1993.
Unfortunately, I was one of the 86 students from the Class of the 93 that attended the school illustrated above. Years ago I choose the military over college because of the fear of returning to the same situations and conditions that I lived with as a child.
Nevertheless, it’s hard to see myself knowing any other way of life. Someone asked the question “Why do some many people remain if conditions are so bad?” My reply to you is Home is where the heart is and nothing can change that idealist belief. Having a little bit of something is better than having nothing at all. I love L.P. and the people within the town because it’s a way of life that has to be experienced in order to respect it. The ill effects of our reality around you can only promote prosperity or create complacence within the minds of our younger scholars.
Therefore, the personification of the overall gloomy situation could lead one to surmise, that this can be proven downfall in every town, city, or diverse community with the US that you encounter whether poor or not the results are always the same.
Just remember, before we are quick to judge those that live in my home town and others just like it because of their race or social status; please take a hard look in the mirror and ask yourself, What would you do, If it the tables were turned and the weight of the world was on your shoulder?
“You see we didn’t choose to be born in LakeProvidence, La, Our destiny chose us!”

I have liked in L. P. most of my life. The picture of the school that I graduated from in 1990 is old an outdated. It actually looks a lot better now. I visited recently and the main problem in this town is the crime. The police are inadequate and incapable of handling the recent crime waves. Murders are on the rise recently committed mostly by children.
My family still lives there and it's not easy for them to just leave because most lack the financial ability to do so. There are projects in place seeking to assist the residents. Many have been approved for home improvement grants and are in the early stages of having their homes remodeled. My grandmother will soon benefit from this grant.
As seen by the aerial view of Lake Providence, there is a lot of water. I foresee a New Orleans type ordeal occurring with the breaking of the levees. I have been going home to visit for years and each time I visit, the lake has risen by leaps and bounds. The last trip was a few weeks ago and I felt very unsafe driving near the lake because it has reached heights never before seen. The government should do something about this immediately before it's too late. I have taken the initiative of writing a letter indicating my concerns in this regards but have yet to receive a response. I will continue to press this issue because my loved ones my soon be in danger as a result.
As you can see, I have passion for this place because I was born and raised there. I did not remain there because this is not a condition in which I wish to raise my children. There is no entertainment so the residents are forced to mingle in front of stores and walk the streets. This only leads to the high level of crimes. There should be a movie theater, skating rink, YMCA or some other form of entertainment to give the residents something more to do. The nearest location for such for entertainment is about 45 miles away and many residents lack the resources to get there. GAS prices alone is an impossibility for some. They are stuck in a sense.
This is L. P. as is stands today regarded as the poorest town it the country.

That school looks like it burn from a fire.I am sure that you can find many photos like that from around the country so I don;t see what that means really. But then when you look aroud the country it is known that 80% of the poevrty in 20% of rural areas. But also 80% of all federal governmennt funding goes to the 20% that reamains because it is in the cities that have the political power. The delta area is i the 20% of rural poverty. Then the other area is in the rural virgina area.It ahs been thsi way for decdes and get very little attention becasue of the politics of poverty within both parties. I really doubt that the situation will change in just months as it hasn't n decades.Afterall most poverty programs are run thru the states by specific grants from the federal governament.Ex=presidents Bush and Clinton are the chairs of groups that are trying to get more private moeny to help these areas because of the difficulty of doing it ploitically. They had a program they appeared on Public television talking abut the problem and the necessity of getting private moeny that will be much easier and more efficent in addressing the needs in a timely fashion. It might also satrtle you taht Mississippi is one of teh poorest staes but is the highest in chartygiving per income dollar.I really doubt you will see any report coming to you unless you search.
