Why is the Louisiana murder rate so high?
I was reading this book Amazon.com: Coroner's Journal: Forensics and the Art of Stalking Death: Louis Cataldie, Patricia Cornwell: Books of a coroner that works in the Baton Rouge area. He's been on many of murder scenes including the ones from 2002 and 2003 from the serial killer Derrick Todd Lee. Right now Louisiana has the third highest homicide rate in the US, behind the District Of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Why is that? Because of the summer heat?

Caliguy, if we told you the reason, it would just get deleted by the moderator.

This doesn't sound quite right...where are you getting your information? I'm not saying it's not correct...just sounds a little off to me. Mainly because I don't recall seeing many comparisons of murder rates between states...it's normally between cities.

HI Ox Ox,
Don't worry too much. I grew up there and was never a victim of a violent crime nor did I know anyone who was. It's always good to be careful of the company you keep. My current home however is in California and....well that's another thread.
Like I said I grew up there and would be happy to answer any questions I can. I moved away 23 years ago and have lived many places both in country and out so I will try to use this experience to be objective.
Good Luck, and the people are extremely friendly.

crime can happen anywhere. Theres nowhere safe from it and in fact Id rather live in Louisiana where there is a precedence of crime because it is a known problem and people are on the lookout for it. But mostly it involves low-income housing and ghetto areas and its pretty easy to avoid those. Lafayette for example has a pretty high crime rate but the vast majority is centered in a very specific area of town that is easy to stay away from.
