Looks like we beat Mississippi....Louisiana finally has the distinction of being the number 1 state in adult obesity. Ask anyone and the biggest thing they'll say that Louisiana has over the other states is our food and good-times!! Maybe we should take a second look at what we're putting in our pie-holes as this isn't really good news for our health.

Wonder what the mortality rates will be in the coming years ahead as our medical system gets privatized and people start falling through the cracks for preventive healthcare? Not a good recipe for a healthy, longer life.

According to a registered dietitian at E.A. Conway, “Obesity has become accepted. People in Louisiana think nothing is wrong with it.”

I don't know which looks worse or is more unhealthy; the obese or methheads.

But seriously, it's a shame that we have ate our way to the number one spot. It doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon. Try to lose weight and you get laughed at. I know people so consumed with eating that they actually plan what they are going to have next meal before they leave the table at the last meal.

Much of the South loves the unhealthy kind of food and I am no different. I have learned to say no more at meal time and it has helped me lose weight. Walking and taking the stairs has helped. Most people could change their weight for the better if only they would try these simple things first then go to something more strenuous. It is not that hard folks.

I eat a lot of fruits and greens and drink mainly tea and water. I also speed walk everywhere. Kinda helps. My metabolism is super high so its not necessary and im actually underweight. I also stop when im full and save the rest to eat later.

Some of my relatives just simply have it in their minds that they are going to eat or drink whatever they want and not worry about the consequences. Many have severe health issues and take a slew of meds for everything from high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, liver problems, gall-bladder, stomach, etc, etc, etc.... They complain about going to the doctor and blame the doc's when the meds don't work their magic as they hoped. They know their lifestyle habits are doing themselves in but they choose to ignore the obvious...it's worse than denial...it's just plain stubborness, choosing lassitude, ignorance and/or indifference to the fact that what they put in their pie-holes is slowly killing them.

I look at my old school yearbook pics from waaay back in the early 1970's and there were very few obese kids in my class. Looking at school pics from today's kids and a majority are lard-butts. A recent family dinner and it's easy to see why... parents letting their kids slurp down 3 or 4 large glasses of soda at a restaurant... or loading up ice tea to where all they taste is sugar...hardly any tea flavor. Pouring in the salt on gumbo before tasting it...WTH??!!! I hid the salt shaker a couple times thinking they wouldn't notice... before taking a taste, they're asking: "where's the salt??" This is ingrained behavior folks. Just like automatically lighting up a ciggie after breakfast or dinner or supper.... no wonder people around me are sick.

We talk a lot about the great "Louisiana Culture of Food, Drink and Festivities"..... turns out our this culture is killing us, one bite or swig at a time. And it's not getting any better.

Sounds like you have a good healthy balance Innotech. Metabolism rates do come into play as people with thyroid problems for example underactive will have difficulty loosing and maintaining weight. A high metabolism is a good thing IMO.

It is also one of the top ten states with the most food stamp usage.

When we ask nothing more of people than to not work and have babies in order to receive benefits, with no limitations on what types of food can be purchased, nutritious or not, this is what we get.
