Default Opinion on Houma

What is Houma like? We are moving there because of a job relocation. I will like to know is it safe, how is the entertainment, best locations to live in Houma etc.

Thank you for all the good advice...

Houma isn't bad. I think most areas are pretty safe. I know that most areas on the East side of the intracoastal waterway aren't great. As far as entertainment, I think there some good nightclubs. They have a mall, but it's not that great of one. New Orleans isn't that far. Also, Houma has banks like most cities have Starbuck's...go figure, there is a bank on practically every corner.

I live on the east side of Houma in Bourg. We are a very safe community with some of the best schools in the area (Upper Little Caillou, Lacache, Bourg Elementary, Montegut Middle, and South Terrebonne). The houses where I live are selling for 250,000 to 350,000 at the time. We have big homes with a lot of land. You don't have to worry about nosey neighbors and we are only 20 to 25 minutes from the mall and Martin Luther King Blvd.

Houma is like any other place, there are good places to settle and there are places to avoid, my main concern is the flooding from hurricanes. I live in Thibodaux but the storms are affecting areas further and further northward as the land subsides and the levees take a beating.

Some of the nicest people I have met are from the Houma area. My husband works in the oilfield and his company is in Houma. It is just like anyplace else, you have the good and the bad. Perhaps go there for a weekend and check out the area before making a decision. I also like the Thibodaux area.

Thibodeaux has a University in town I think, may be a bit more diverse.

We are proud of our French heritage and many others in Louisiana are of various decents and we all live pretty peacefully. We live off the land and are very hard, tireless workers. Cajun men are wonderful, devoted fathers; we eat most anything that moves because our forefathers had to make due off the land; warmer, friendlier people you will not find anywhere else; break down on that highway sometimes and the people will stop and help, guarrranteeeeed. I grew up in Houma, am 1/2 Cajun, have traveled the world and am retiring and will move back to Houma. Try working in those oil fields for a week and then see what you think. If you don't like Cajun food and music, if you don't like to wave to neighbors and talk, then you had better not move to Houma. Humidity..that's why God invented air conditioners. I have found Houma to be very safe, especially compared to other cities. And one more item, they treat us Veterens like gold; we are highly honored in Houma.
