Default helathy econonmy-nothing for rent and high sales!

We have been planning a move to Alexandria for six mos. now and I am still shocked at the economy there. We are having a 75% off sale here in FL. for our 4/4 pool home on lake. My son goes to join his dad in two wks. for school and I am going in Oct. We still have nowhere to live! Husbands company is paying rent for a year, but there are no homes to rent. There are four of us and a dog, so an apt. is not an option. Here every house on every corner is for sale or rent or something!!!! How did you all manage to escape the recession? Why is your housing market still so strong???

Louisiana didn't boom buring the 90s/early 2000s, which meant we weren't going to crash when things went south. Plus, the price of oil still affects things in Louisiana. And in Alexandria's case, it benefitted from getting the Union Tank Car business a few years ago.

Alexandria-Pineville is experiencing job growth in a number of areas. In addition to Union Tank Car, the health care industry is expanding. There is a growing industrial complex in the Kingsville section of Pineville centered around a Procter & Gamble plant and a new CLECO power plant is under construction.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have put such a great impact on housing that Louisiana will probably not have the housing part of the recession hit for another 2 years. On the other hand I have seen quite a few foreclosures in the Ville Platte Gazette and that is unusual for such a small parish/county.
