HURRICANE GUSTAV UPDATE as of 7:00
Hurricane Gustav is weakening, but is still a Category 1 hurricane. At 7:00 P.M. CDT, the center of the hurricane was 15 miles northwest of Opelousas, Louisiana and about 35 miles northwest of Lafayette, Louisiana. Gustav is moving northwest at 14 mph with winds up to 75 mph and higher gusts. Gustav is expected to become a Tropical Storm tonight or early Tuesday and a tropical depression late Tuesday or on Wednesday. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 200 miles. Storm surge flooding will begin to subside tonight.

Also, the mayor in New Orleans said that it is too early for evacuees to come back tomorrow, but homecoming is days away, and not weeks away like it was with Katrina.

I have a sister-in-law in Lockport. I heard from her yesterday. She evacuated to Alabama but her kids are in Lockport (she has a sister who works for the hospital and she can not leave).......
HEARD FROM HER NOW.....
She heard that they can't come back now. The bayou's have flooded. More to come this afternoon.

NEED ICE FOR medicine and food
I am sending this email to help my daughter and family obtain ice in the Lutcher area (St James Parish. The have been without power since yesterday morning and need ice pretty bad to save food. Does Any one know where they can drive to, to obtain ICE for their food and medicine that needs to be refrigerated.
Thanks for any information - There phone only works at times so I am trying to help out to locate ice from my home in Florida.

needing ice
Do you know where to locate Ice in or around St. James Parish? I am trying to get this information for my daughter and family in Lutcher.
They need the ice for medicine and for saving their food. They have been without power since early yesterday.

Can anyone help in finding ice for my daughter and her family? They are in St. James Parish - If they know where to go - they could drive to that location. Phone service as well as electric in now down - I am located in Florida trying to assist them.

This may be a haul, but this is for the BR area..I will try to find something closer

Would they be able to get to Slidell? I've got some frozen bottles of water and a couple of ice chests. Check your PM for contact info. Linda try text msg. for cell contact; it may take a while (hours to days) for the text to get thru, but it worked during Katrina.

I just got word that NEXTEL has crews on scene putting up temp cell towers and expect to have nearly 100% of their coverage back by the end of today. There will be spotty outages as generators need to be refueled and the temp towers get moved...but in general it should be much better later today.
