I've never heard of it, so I highly doubt it's dangerous. What city is Buras near?

Oh okay, I take that back... I have heard of it. If this is any help to you, search Wikipedia for Buras, Louisiana (since City-Data doesn't have one.) You'll find a LOT of information on there.

Finally, a topic that I can be helpful on.

I was born and raised in Port Sulphur, which is about 15 miles north of Buras. My father worked in Buras.

It "was" a wonderful community, as was all of Plaquemines Parish.

As a young boy, I "thought" I needed to get out to see the world, but wished I had never moved.

At first glance, it's not pretty at all......unless you get out on the water, then it is paradise. It was the people that made the place, and they aren't there anymore.

Our family homestead was wiped right down to the foundation. There are still no utilities down there and the only sources of groceries, etc. are in temporary trailers.

It is a completely different place now than it was pre-katrina. It would have been safer than the average town prior to, but don't know now. I would guess very safe, as it is an abandoned town.

To give you an idea of how far out in the boonies it is, the nearest redlight is about 50 miles away in Belle Chase.

Bring your fishing pole!!! Try to find a way to get out to do some shallow water redfishing. That area is arguably the finest sports fishery in the world. Yes, the world!

Go to Salvo's in Belle Chase for boiled seafood one night.

What sort of work are you going to do?

Default Buras

Hi,

This is probably a little late but for those of you interested in the recovery or lack thereof in Buras, there is a website called www.southplaquemines.net that will give you some info on the area. There are a few restaurants in Port Sulphur, 2 in Buras and 2 in Venice. Empire Inn and Venice Inn are open and there are numerous trailer parks renting trailers. We have 2 grocery stores & 1 gas station in Buras, 1 Gas station in Boothville, 1 in Venice and a grocery there too. Only thing you need to bring is your wallet full of money because the stores in Buras are ridiculously high. Have fun!
