Deridder and Leesville will be your best places to look for work. My husband used to work on base and it is a LONG drive back and forth to Fort Polk everyday. It gets old quick.
Lake Charles is a decent city. Nice size and decent economy. It has anything you could want for the most part as far as places to shop and even a few specialty stores. Not a whole lot to to do but enough. Movies, bowling, putt putt, bars, music, good food, casino.
It would make for a good day trip or night out but I wouldn't want to drive it every day.
