Relocating to Alexandria
WOW! My family and I are relocating to ALexandria, LA. We are moving from a large metropolitian city. I have no clue where to begin.
We have 4 children one of which is special needs, he is 4. We also have a small dog. We are seeking a house to rent. I can't seem to find anything. What are the neighboring cities? Doeas anyone have any resources to share for relocating to this area?

I attended Louisiana College in Pineville, Alexandria's neighbor. Nearby towns are Tioga, Pollock, Ball, Kingsville, Anandale, Shady Oaks...can't remember any others at the moment. I personally would try to find housing in Pineville rather than Alexandria. I know the area around Louisiana College is really nice and quiet. As far as schools, Tioga schools, particularly Tioga Elementary, are supposed to be really good. Try searching for the Rapides school district, and you should be able to find a list of schools in the area.

You might find Alexandria a bit of a culture shock since you are moving there 'from a large metropolitan city.' IIRC the air base was shut down years ago, so I am not certain what the area's largest employer might be these days.
You might want to check some of the links at this city-data page: http://www.city-data.com/zips/71301.html

Most of the Pineville area is decent. Also west Alexandria is fine for the most part. There are also nice places to live along the 28 West corridor west of Alexandria such as the Kincaid Lake area and along Bayou Rapides. There is also Woodworth to the south of Alexandria on U.S 165.

We lived in the Woodworth area for 4 years and preferred it to most areas of Alexandria and Pineville. Southwest Alexandria has good areas and most of the newer subdivisions in Pineville are good, too. Yes, you will have a big culture shock as Alexandria/Pineville are small, rural-like towns with minimal options for good schools, recreation and socialization. Good luck!

My daughter and her family are relocating from Alexandria. Check the Garden District. There are several homes for sale and some may consider renting. My daughter has 4 children and has had good experiences with Alexandria schools. Good luck to you and your family.

Thank you for your response. Is the Garden Distric a subdivision?
