I am SO glad to have come across this thread. My husband and I have put Lousiana on our list of possible states to move to. And Mandeville just came up in conversation last week.
I know it's a "different way of life" than the one we have here in California, but that's what we're looking for. More room to move; possibly an older home to restore (not like Katrina" restore! LOL!).
If you don't mind me kinda jacking this thread, could you post up some "cons" of moving to the areas listed? BR, Houma, Nprth of NO, etc.

BR Pros
- City has been growing, esp since Katrina
- Laid back town
- LSU Football
- Variety of restaurants
BR Cons
- "Inner City" school system unless you live in Zachary or Central
- Traffic has gotten nasty since Katrina, yet our politicians move at a snails pace on getting us road funding
- Resistance to change, esp with the "civic association types."
- Lower wage levels

Pros/cons
Canibeyou,
Funny, you're wanting to move here, I can't wait to leave here, may be heading out your way,(CA./NV.) for a job offer-but that's just me!. There's definitely good and bad of moving here, and if you do, St. Tammany Parish, B.R. are okay choices. But overall, I should tell you that Louisiana as whole has historically been ranked last or next to last in many quality of life issues,(politics, crime, the school system, bad roads, bad drivers, and of course hurricanes, flooding, very humid summers.). But if you like culture, partying, gambling, outdoor festivals, boating/fishing, Louisiana ranks quite high, I guess it depends on what your priorities are! Good luck!

If you go to Baton Rouge, you really want to avoid the Eastern side of the Metro area. It is getting way to crowded and they have been having serious drainage and flooding problems because of improper urban planning. You should look at West Feliciana or Pointe Coupee Parishes. Pointe Coupee is more affordable than West Feliciana, but its public schools are in need of an overhaul. On the other hand, Pointe Coupee also has two private PK-12 schools with excellent test scores, one of them is a Catholic School. In West Feliciana your school choices are more limited than in Pointe Coupee because of a smaller population, but their public schools are a little better, but there are also no private schools in West Feliciana, and private schools really are the way you want to go as far as educating your children in Louisiana. For some excellent info about Pointe Coupee Parish, I invite you to visit www.pcchamber.org

Also in that area a lot of great stores and restaurants. Shreveport around Youree Drive seems to be the place to be in the Shreveport area. Several new stores, outlits, restarurants...great place to live. alot of movie producers have dicovered us and we have had a lot of filming here for while now. We also have great schools, colleges. This city is old but getting newer every day. Come visit!

Just a little advice on this, don't do it. Construction is limited in this city, stay south, Baton Rouge is where the growth is. Unless you work in a casino, or at the GM plant, normal work is hard to come by in Shreveport. The entire metro hasn't grown much in population for that last 20 years. There is great flavor to the city and I enjoyed living there, but jobs are not plentiful. And, unless you live in Bossier parish, the schools are not great. Great medical community however, hospital care is outstanding.

Talking from a students point of view LSU area is fine. Apartments around LSU are decent and houses are fairly cheep compared with other states.

Depending on what kind of houses you are looking for there is almost anything you are looking for in Baton Rouge or New Orleans. Other towns are too small and not interesting, in my opinion.
