I disagree. I-49 is one of the smoothest highways in La. and it's quite scenic. I love looking at the oaks in fields and the lack of billboards and trashy exits with gas stations/etc...

Drove it today to and from Washington, LA on our visit to Magnolia Ridge. Beautiful stretch of highway, partially for the reasons you cited. Just stay off the service roads south of Opelousas toward Lafayette. They are all being resurfaced.
