Default Mixed neighbourhoods in Shreveport/Bossier?

Time is drawing closer to the move for me and my hsuband! We wanted to know if there are any nice mixed areas in the area? We are a mixed couple and have read that the area is very segregated - we don't want to live in an area with just black or just white - we want an area with a mix of different people and races that is a good area where we can raise our children when we have them (for the time we will be in the area). My husband is airforce and we are considering moving on base because what we've heard, it will be the most mixed neighbourhood! But if we stay for a while, we want to buy a house. We're not talking about 90% white and 10% black or vice versa, but a more even mix. I come from London, England, so the very thought of segregation scares me and makes me feel very sad.

Thanks

Most neighborhoods are mixed. Just the worst neighborhoods seem to be majority black. Most of your middle-class neighborhoods in Shreveport have a nice mix. Perhaps majority white, next would be black, then Middle-Eastern, and a little Asian.

Don't fear segregation... it doesn't exist anymore. You just have some areas that are "whiter" or "blacker" than others. White flight does exist, but you will still have black neighbors wherever you are. Just be careful in the smaller towns, as they can be less accepting of mixed-race couples.

Don't buy a house in an evenly mixed neighborhood and assume it will stay that way, chance are it could be 90% black in ten more years.

Look in south Bossier or probably any place in Bossier with all the Military you wont be alone being mixed or being from another contry. If you dont make it an issue you will blend in perfectly in Bossier.

Honestly, it depends on the price range. The higher up you go in price the more all-white it becomes. So plan accordingly. This is to say, if you happen to be able and/or want to afford something in a higher price range than the median house price (140K as of the last quarter) you're gonna HAVE to accept more racial homogeneity. The curve is inversely proportional as a function of home price, good bad or indifferent. There's several communities where a lot of military families centrally dwell in (dogwood is one). Good luck.

Yes, south Bossier is for the most part pretty well integrated. White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc. Nobody really pays much attention.

Agreeing with that has been said already, anywhere near the base is going to be good. Dogwood South, Stockwell Place, etc in the north and Southgate, Plantation Trace, etc to the south all seem pretty well integrated to me.

Default Depends on where you're from

To me it's not very integrated here. I was actually "warned" by coworkers not to mix with other races. I'm still working on finding it but supposedly there are open minded groups that are progressive. I'll admit I've only been here a few months but it's been a shock.

For nice areas to live, South Shreveport off of Ellerbe is our preference. My husband works in South Bossier and the commute is easy for him. Going from Bossier to Shreveport (if you live on the south side) can be a challenge. Housing is pretty reasonable but older - 70's and 80's - and needs updating. There are some new developments that we were told lots of military families and college residents purchase.

I really don't know what anyone is talking about here and I find it very humorous. White and black people work and live together here on a daily basis - in complete harmony. What the heck are you talking about? Seriously...

There will always be exceptions to the rule, just as there are a lot of large racism groups in larger cities like Chicago and New York, and there are organized groups of homophobics in San Francisco. If it's a perfect world you're looking for, you'll never find it.

Or perhaps I'm just used to what it's like here, but I've spent my fair share of time in the north and midwest and have seen the same problems there. For example, in Champaign, IL, my father-in-law would say "we don't go down that road because that's the 'black' part of town". It doesn't sound any more racist and segregated than that, if you ask me. Even in places like Allendale and Cedar Grove, which are mostly-black neighborhoods, there ARE white people and Hispanics living there. And I don't know anyone who avoids those neighborhoods because of their racial makeup, but rather due to their high crime rates.

By the way, I know there are a lot of racist people here, homophobics, religious hypocrites, etc, but I have learned to stay clear of those people. As an autistic adult I am not a very social person because of it, so those types of people mean nothing to me anyway.
