Good point, I forgot about those! The ONLY thing with those is the proximity to the base. While the airplane noise doesn't bother me anymore because I grew up right next to the base, it may bother some people. But yeah, the apartments are quite nice. We almost bought a house right next to those apartments a few years ago before finally settling in Haughton.

Ahh yes I didn't think about that, we have been living on base a year now, I guess I don't notice the sound much anymore!

When I first moved from Shreveport, that was how I knew I was truly not a Shreveport resident anymore. It was probably 6 months later, and a plane flew overhead, and I actually looked up to see what it was. Until then, it had probably been 15 years since the last time I actually noticed a plane flying overhead. It was always a comforting sound to me, knowing those guys were there for us.

I remember the night that all the planes left for the first Gulf War. I was maybe 3 or 4, leaving the golf course at Northwood Country Club with my dad, and I noticed that there was a lot more plane activity than normal. I asked Dad about it and he told me they were going to war, and I remember being scared, worried that we would get bombed. Then when we didn't get bombed, I remember always associating the sound of planes with security.

You must be much younger than I'm thinking... 3 or 4 years old in the early 90s? I pegged you as older than that. That war began in late 1990, so I was 10. I'm 29 now.

I, too, always felt safe - particularly with the B-52s. Though when I was younger the sound affected me badly due to my Asperger's and associated sensory sensitivity.

So if I am looking around $350k for housing and wanting the top schools in the safe spots...what should I be concentraiting on? Don't want the high falutin snobs, just nice safe area, great neighbors that you actually hang out with, and the better schools in the area...

Thanks,

You can buy a 4 bedroom/3 bath house anywhere in north Louisiana for $350k, and can probably find one in a gated golf-course community. I grew up in the Shreveport real estate business, and never understood just how cheap the housing was until I got out and moved around the country.

Good point! When I was pricing neighborhoods in Chicago, particularly the one where the Second City comedy club is (I can't remember the name of the neighborhood but I fell IN LOVE with it) I was floored - absolutely FLOORED - by those prices!

Shreveport-Bossier real estate recently hit its highest point EVER and it's still cheaper than most of the country. But surprisingly, you can get the same amount of home for the same price in Dallas and Houston - both of those cities have very low home prices for their size. Just don't expect to get the same value in their highrise condo buildings.

I've never been to the area (or the state...or the south, for that matter), but I'm sure that like all cities it has areas that you don't really want to live in if you have a choice. Could someone tell me what they are (in terms that will allow me to find them on a map)? We're a young couple with no kids, just looking for an inexpensive apartment in a safe neighborhood.

Also, how is the public transportation in Shreveport/Bossier? And how is Bossier pronounced?

I would really appreciate ANY other advice about moving to the area as well. I've never made a move like this and I've only lived in rural areas of the Northeast and Alaska, so I'm very lost.

Thank you!
I would suggest you search "City of Shreveport" on the internet and look at the crime map. Be careful because sometimes what you see IS NOT what you get.

The crime map is the most accurate representation of crimes in the city. So in this case, what you see is, in fact, what you get.
