I've lived close to the New Iberia area for most of my life.
Try the school report cards for school ratings (2006 is the most current):

My son went to Assembly Christian School in New Iberia. It's a private school, preschool through 12th grade. It's a great school and they provide aftercare. Some public elementary schools offer French immersion.

Hopkins Street is a crime area. I lived off of Parkview for a few years, and it was getting kind of seedy.

Oh yeah, and watch out buying a house in the Hwy. 14 area. Some homes flooded there from the hurricane. Make sure you're in a no flood zone. If you're west of highway 90, chances are you're in a flood zone. Which reminds me, if you've never lived in a hurricane area before, be prepared to haul tail for higher ground at least every few years. And stock up on vienna sausage. :P
