If you decided to leave the state, where would you go?
Just a thought, i live in Covington now, but am thinking of heading out west in a few years. Louisiana is NOT getting any better, I suppose you have to really love it to want to spend your entire life here. But considering all the problems, before and after Katrina and potentially losing our coast to the Gulf, more/worse hurricanes, etc. I almost didn't back here after my military career was over, but I have family here. How about YOU out there?

My family and I did move last year. We now live in Denver. You cannot even compare the two areas. It is great to live in a progressive, proactive and friendly area. The main thing my wife and I keep saying is why didn't we do this sooner. You should definately consider Colorado, it's wonderful.

My husband is military and retiring at the end of this summer. He is from Ohio, we are not going there. I'm from S'port/Bossier, and I want to go back there. We have been looking at jobs online and are not really finding anything suitable for him. He wants to go to Ft Worth area, work at Lockheed (sp). I just don't know what to do! I miss my family so much, my son doesn't really even know our families. We were stationed Patrick (fl), and I really liked it there and think about that sometimes but its so far from home. I guess I'm not much help, huh? LOL

Thanks for those responses, guys! TraciK, I know how you feel, my mother's from Shreveport originally. Even though St. Tammany(where I now live) is a much better quality of life than New Orleans, I worry that it wont last. Micktooth-Yea, I've been through Colorado, it's a whole different world-I like mountains and snow myself. I'm retired Navy, and have lived in Virginia, Florida, Nevada, CA, and Washington State,(Seattle area was nice!) i've also considered northern Arizona(Flagstaff area) or Utah.

Good luck with your hard decisions. FYI, I've previously lived in NY,MI and TX. We had to leave my wife's family who are still in New Orleans, but often times you have to make hard decisions in life when it comes to what's best for your immediate family. My family happens to be in Ft Worth. Just remember to do what's best for you.

Anywhere within a days drive of BR which was big enough to have jobs, but wasn't a "rat race" metropolis, like (I've visisted these places and/or know people who moved there).
(1) Nashville
(2) Birmingham

We recently moved to CO as well - Fort Collins to be exact. There is no comparison. I have the same sentiments - I wish I would have done it years ago. And this is from someone who has lived in LA all my life. The weather is great too
Edit: I also wanted to add I lived in the Madisonville/Covington area myself before moving to CO. Its probably one of the better places in LA (have lived in Ponchatoula area, Metairie, and Chalmette as well), but still nothing like it is out here. I do admit moving away from family is not easy, but family can always visit and there is more to do here in CO when they DO visit, trust me.

Can't get out of Metairie until I qualify to retire (2009-2010). I am thinking of Springfield, Missouri; Huntsville, Alabama; or College Station, Texas, in that order. Probably Springfield, but still looking.
Of course, if my concerns about the levees/floodwalls/drainage and about the crime here are somehow magically resolved in the next three years, I'd love to stay. The chance of THAT happening are about zero, though one can dream. LOL
My family is in Hawaii, which is way too expensive for me to consider. I can't live there. As for the New Orleans area, well, there is nothing to keep me here, except for the memories of what New Orleans once was.
My daughter lives in Portland, Oregon, but I think the real estate is probably getting to be sky high out there. Silly me, I'd like a house AND enough to live on when I retire - -

go west young man!
Well, looks I'll be heading west after all and possibly alot sooner than I thought. Looks like Nevada,(for now at least), may be accepting a civil service job a naval air station in Fallon,NV. It's close to the Reno/Carson City area and beautiful Lake Tahoe/Sierra mountains.
