alexandria
anna561, we to are looking at central LA due to a possiable job, i posted a questions about alexandria and have gotten alot ofgood feedback.
its like most towns, going to have its good/bad side, but considoring areas we have lived, and all ive learned about it now, alexandria/surronding doesnt sound to bad, in fact, i think it will be a good fit for us, already have talked to a few that live there directly and they are so friendly and welcoming, and praise it.
ive also been able to get folks to give me specifics on what parts of town/streets/neighborhoods to avoid...if you go to the post...you can read all the info, and better yet, like me, write it all down for future refrence, such as when your looking at rentals, ya can check the "list" and be sure its not in a bad side of town.
ive just asked about the schools, so keep tabs on the post to get info on schools as it comes in to.
feel free to DM me, will share all info i can as i get it about alexandria.
I dont recommment leesville(by the base), its not really central, but we checked it out also since we are retired airforce, its a typical dump full of things we would not want to raise kids near, especially our daughter....
but we are looking at something in the middle so we would be close to alexandria for job and base for medical/etc.
we do not particulary want to live right in town, we prefer outside of town in the country actually, but i am focusing on town as a whole in case.
check it out, the surounding parts, etc, and let me know if i can help. be sure to read responses to my post about it. take care!!

Ah ok, you'll probably be fine in Alexandria And since Lafayette is less than an hour away if you get the urge to do some shopping on the weekend you can easily make it there or to Baton Rouge in double the time. There is a huge difference between Alexandria and Lafayette though...especially culturally (food, people, etc.). Most would prefer living an hour south in Lafayette purely for that reason but if distance to family is really a biggie Alexandria is probably better for you.
Sweetlady, I think your post is one that I was referring to...glad you got some good info

I also want to be somewhat close to the town of Winnfield, as I have more family there. I am looking for a place with reasonably good schools, a decent/safe area with a family atmosphere, and not too small. I want to be within reasonable distance of shopping and restaurants if at all possible. Does anyone know of a place that fits that description at all? I will need to find a house to rent for under $650 a month that is decent. I also have pets, and will have to have a rental where they can go too. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

We've just learned that we're being transferred soon (don't know how fast this decision is going to happen!) Seems that our location, Village Green Subdivision in Pineville, LA is about right. Alexandria is just "across the river", the Red River. I've driven to the airport in New Orleans in about 3 hours, and my husband's job takes him to Winnfield for service calls occasionally during the day, not far at all. He's there in less than an hour, maybe even 45 minutes.

Where is a great place to raise a country family down there...
I had personally thought about moving down around there also. I just was not sure where would be a great place to raise a family. I also was wondering if there was any amish or mennonite people within the state. Here in Indiana there are lots of them and my family is of Mennonite Faith, thus making it hard if the kids did not have anyone they would relate with.

I have a 2003 four bedroom doublewide on almost 3 acres of land by Cotile Lake which is about 25-30 minutes from Alexandria that will be available to rent at the end of July. I'm trying to decide between continuing to handle the rent myself or let a agency take over. We have had a great experience with the last family who rented from us and had a great relationship with them. I know many people feel more comfortable with an agency but the only problem I have is that they mark the prices up so much. Please let me know if anyone is interested and I will give you more details....

Small town feel Btween two major cities
You could move to Saint Amant, which is about half-way btween Baton Rouge and New Orleans, great schools, great people, Country living. Access to US-61 (Airline Highway) and I-10. Gonzales is 5 miles east, with shopping and food.
