Default alexandria rental info

I am taking a position in Alexandria(From Dallas) and would like to know about rental properties. It seems very hard to find anything, and I need something like 3bd/2b in a safe neigborhood for $1,000 or less a month. I don't need it right inside of Alexandria but would need to be no more then 10 miles from work.
I went to look at something over near the zoo, but they wanted $800 a month and it didnt have central ac and there were mobile homes parked everywhere.

Besides the classifieds in the Town Talk, I can't think of anything that has a good list of rentals in the area.

That area behind the zoo with the "college" streets is not the best area. Although some doctors and professionals might be starting to move into that area, I still wouldn't recommend it. There won't be much in Alexandria below $1,000 in a good area. You might be able to find something on the North side of the river in Pineville, Tioga, Ball, down Highway 28 East towards Libuse and Deville, down the Old Marksville Highway, or maybe even Grant Parish.

Default thanks

Thanks for the advice. I went over into Pineville and looked around, but because of time couldn't stay long. I will check that out more thoroughly when I can.

I ran into the same situation last summer. We moved to the Alexandria area from Fort Worth and had a heck of a time finding a place to rent. I scanned the paper daily for about a month, but we finally found a place from someone on here! It's a little farther out than we wanted to be but it's great out here. FYI, I wouldn't feel comfortable living near the zoo, especially since I have small kids. Where are you working?

I am going to managing a retail store over on hwy 28/Coliseum bvld. I'm ok on being outside the city limits some, but need to be within 10-15 minutes max from the job. I do have a couple of ones to look at bewteen Boyce and Alexandria(just off of hwy 1) do you know anything about that area?

LA 1 between Macarthur and Air Base Road is pretty nasty - I heard it went down in the 70s. I'd stay closer to 28 "outside" of Macarthur.

I've never been in that area so I can't say, sorry. We live in Boyce, but on the west side of 49.

Most of the rural areas outside of Alexandria to the west are decent, but there are a couple of somewhat run-down trailerpark areas. The main residential area along highway 1 outside of Alexandria is called Rapides Station. This area is a combination of houses and manufactured housing. One thing to keep in mind with this area is that it is located on the path that planes take as they land at the airport. The best rural areas west of Alexandria are near Highway 28 West and Bayou Rapides/ Hot Wells Road and on Kincaid and Cotile Lakes.

Closer in Alexandria, there are Grundy Cooper, Cloverleaf, and Westwind subdivisions north of Highway 28 West. Grundy Cooper and Cloverleaf were mostly built in the 50's and 60's and contain affordable housing. It's not a bad area, but some of the housing looks a little run-down in areas. Westwind is a newer neighborhood that is also relatively affordable, but many complain that the houses here were cheaply constructed. I don't recommend the elementary school in this area, Mabel Brasher.

I would not recommend England Drive and Hwy 1 between Airbase Rd and MacArthur Drive.

There are also parts of Pineville and Tioga that would probably be a reasonable commute from where you are working.

One of the main things that brought this area down was when a huge public house project called Karst Park was built around 1975. This project has recently been demolished and a new "condo style" public housing complex is supposed to be constructed.

There are also some low-rent duplexes in Kellyland subdivision which is located along Hwy 1 north towards Airbase Road.
