Possible transfer to Shreveport - where to live? (Bossier City, Reserve: real estate, apartments)

I am a single 39 year old female, potentially moving to Shreveport from the western suburbs of Chicago. I am trying to get some info on where I might live if I do indeed get transferred. So far whatever I have read about moving to Shreveport is pretty negative, lots of crime and not many good neighborhoods.

My job would have me going to grocery stores throughout the shreveport/Bossier city area. I have read a little about Broadmoor, sounds ok.

Any thoughts on potential areas to live would be greatly appreciated. I would be renting, as not expecting to be there over 2 years.

Broadmoor is a good area, but then I grew up there and am somewhat partial. North Bossier is good too. It is difficult to find a house under $1,200 a month, but the Reserve Apartments are $989 (2 bedroom) and it is very safe there. One could say the exact same thing about Chicago, but as you and I both know, Chicago has some very desirable neighborhoods. This is true for Shreveport as well. Yes, it has its bad spots, but good neighborhoods are not hard to find at all. In fact, overall crime and violent crime has been on the decline in Shreveport for many years, and is basically confined to just a few specific areas of the city. True, these areas make up a good portion of the city, but still it is easy to identify these areas. Just like in Chicago, if your gut tells you a certain area isn't a good one, chances are it's not and you should probably go with your gut. There are some minor exceptions, of course.

As a single young female (25), I faced the same situation when I moved here last year. I've read about the horrible crime on this site, but I've never experienced or heard of anyone experiencing any crime. I'm not sure if you're looking for a house to rent or apartments so I'll talk about both.

If you want to rent a house, I recommend the South Highlands area. If you go this route, I'd say stay south of Kings Hwy and East of I-49. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also, check out Shreveport's craigslist page but be wary of some of the locations. There's a local real estate company, Realty Executives, that offer rental houses. I'm sure that's not the only one, but that's one I know for sure has properties.

If you're looking for an apartment, I'd recommend the Willows. I currently live there and I love it. It's really quite, located in a nice neighborhood, and very safe. I'd also recommend Island Park (used to live here), Champion Lake, and River Walk. These are all located together off a major parkway, are more crowded than the Willows and more expensive, but they are very nice and safe. All the ones I've listed so far are close to Shreveport's major shopping area. I'd steer clear of any downtown apartment, a meth lab blew up in one a couple months back and that's a big deal breaker for me. If you want to check out Bossier City, Lexington Place and LaCrosse are really nice and are located near town. The Reserve, Cypress Pointe, and Stockwell are nice but they are located a little ways out of town.

Well FWIW, the Pier just off Clyde Fant was the seen of a multiple homicide 2 or 3 years ago. Location is convenient but it has a lot of "transitional residents". Not knocking military guys but they come and go a lot and I've observed a number of times when there were a considerable number of people going in and out of apartments at all hours.

I don't live there but I do know a couple workers who do / have. . . they all say the same thing.

Further south is Champion Lakes and another newer complex ( I can't recall the name )... they are much much better so check there. SouthEast S'port and Bossier is where I'd say rent if you can.
