Default Lodging between Port Sulphur and New Orleans?

I'll be in LA later this summer and was wondering if anyone could advise me on finding somewhere nice, clean and safe to stay in between Mew Orleans and Port Sulphur. Somewhere affordable would be grand and somewhere approximately in the middle of those two would be even better.

I'd start with Belle Chasse. The West Bank (Algiers section of NO, Gretna, Terrytown, Harvey, Marrero, Westwego) is iffy.
