Funny you say that, There are people who dress up in costume and chase chickens for Mardi gras, mostly in the rural areas, If I were you I would read up on it so you wont be so culture shocked here is a site you can read up on about this.

Courir de Mardi Gras in Church Point Louisiana

I think you are finally getting it You will fit-in this area real good.
How cool is this site. Looks like a quaint area \\

For Lafayette Mardi Gras do you have to lift your top to get beads like in New Orleans (not that I would do that never ever never ever Oh well maybe then I could show off my Sam's club under garments) since that is where I probably will be shopping.

Church point is a small town, and very much quaint, but it is close enough that you could still feasibly shop in Lafayette. Im not overly familiar with the town personally.

I think I travel through the African American side of town which is near downtown area. Maybe this is just thevery poor side of town. What is the best exit off of I10 to see Laffayette?

Most of the nice part of Lafayette is not very close to the interstate. You should drive down Kaliste Saloom on the other side of town.

Get off at the Ambassador Caffery exit on I10 or turn down Kaliste Saloom on HWY 90. EIther way, you still have to drive a ways, but youll soon see the better parts of town. Im currently visiting my parents on the Northside, and its quit, safe, and peaceful on their street.

Sadly most Louisiana towns look absolutely dumpy along the interstates. The absolute worst I've seen would be Morgan city. It's almost as if the city is purposely trying to discourage visitors. If I were governor I would enact a statewide zoning ordinance that would severely restrict what can be built within two miles of a highway (i.e. no scrap yards, mobile homes, etc...)
