What a dump! Fasten your seat belts! Bette Davis movie lines.
Whenever someone says, "What a dump!" I think of Bette Davis. She is in a small Wisconsin town and yearns to go back to the big city--Chicago--and plots to do so and I think she does someone in to accomplish that goal.
Dumps are often in the eye of the beholder. I have flown into Shreveport and gone through the south part of town to get on Mansfield Road to go down to Toledo Bend. That is an old, industrial part of the city and rather rundown in spots--yes, it is dumpy--but I was not so naive as to think that all of Shreveport was like that.
Anyone visiting a town should do some research and be prepared to investigate all parts of it before making a blanket pronouncement.
Just about every town I know has some dumpy areas. You just have to look around all parts of the landscape a bit. It is easy to make generalizations without investigations.
Better to say: "The part of Lafayette I saw was dump. Where are the better areas?" Don't mean to get preachy on you. But I just had to mention that was my initial gut reaction to Shreveport before I reasoned that it was just that particular part of town that was rundown.

I think Louisiana cities have trouble showing their best along the interstates compared to other places I've been. I know Shreveport for example looks pretty rough. There are lots of junkyard looking types of businesses that openly display themselves (business purposes?) along I20 and it really doesn't give travelers to our city a good impression at all. Also the weeds never seem to get removed, nor does the general cleanliness of the Int. get taken care of. Ruston looks pretty good for a town its size; clean and modern. Bossier looks good too except that the I20 is rough and needs rebuilding (I do believe that the overpass over the railroads west of Airline interchange is going to collapse one day). I doubt Lafayette looks any worse than any other city in La, probably better than most. BTR looks good to me, but it should as it is the state capitol.

Who said I did It after you said anything. I was on top of that google street view action as soon as they came up with it. I've explored in detail every city in this state. Take a look at it, any bozo knows the ghetto when they see it. In Lafayette, it's the area with the run-down houses.
And then here you come with the jokes again. The hot city of Monroe ...almost as funny as sexy and buttery.

That's not fair, sounds like you didn't do your homework and now you're blaming Lafayette because of it.
I am sure we can go to your home town, San Antonio and find the same run down places throughout the city.
I'm also sure you will be disappointed with New Orleans when you get here.

That describes Alexandria. I-49 goes through mostly run-down and underdeveloped parts of the city. There is only one exit in Alexandria with restaurants and hotels at Airbase Road. The lack of development along I-49 in Alexandria probably comes as a result of its opening only 13 years ago in 1996.

Thats not my perception of Alexandria, I saw businesses along the hwys when I came in. It wasnt until I got into the most inner secrions of the city where I was like, ummm........ yeah, Alexandria can you like not fool me into thinking your booming. But its been a few years maybe its different now.
Hey the Kurt guy hit it dead on the head, every city has its rough areas. NY, LA, Chicago, all has rough areas. You have to do your research on whats all the fuss about this progressive city talk. I mean most can say the same about the great city of New Orleans which has huge dumpy areas with grass growing in the middle of the streets, but because New Orleans has very popular well known sites, the rough areas get overlooked or never get looked at all. Matter of fact those areas are often discouraged by residents to not be seen.
Maybe we all should be specific about whats great about Lafayette so we wont throw people off. I never heard people say go hang out in the 3rd Ward area in New Orleans, they are specific in what special about their city, like Bourbon Street.

Come to think of it almost every place looks pretty bad off the freeway! Especially in the South. Louisiana just doesn't accomodate the area near its interstate. Shreveport looks crummy. So does Monroe (downtown looks good but that's all) Obviously Lafayette. Different entrances to BTR like the motocyclist, certain entrances to NOLA. Alexandria.
Good examples: Causeway Bridge, Mandeville-Metairie/NOLA. Lake Charles is so-so, I-10 N to BTR is OK, better than I-110 and the old bridge/scotlandville. Ruston looks clean.
I think Lafayette coming in from I-49 is pretty good! You can see some suburbs and things. Its superior than I-10.
