Default Did you ever get any positive response to your question?

Hi,

We too now live in the Opelousas/Leonville area and have a special needs child. We are very concerned about the lack of resources that appear to be in place and want to know if you've located any since posting this message.

Thank you,
EaglenTigers88

The classrooms are aligned with and modeled after TEACCH methodology and are really fantastic environments for students with autism. If you are in this area, definitely give Special Services a call. Actually, investigating your options via your parish (whichever that may be) school board is a good idea so that you can get a handle on what is available in your area.
I have been teaching elementary students with autism (exclusively) for the past seven years. We'll be moving to Opelousas after this school year, and I hope they have similar classrooms there.
Good luck and PM me if you have any questions.

Dear cvazqu and jillysue40, I am so excited to hear that CADDO Parish is using the TEACCH methodology; we lived in North Carolina for three years, which is where TEACCH originated. I hope that as teachers, you're given the autonomy, encouragement, and resources to bring TEACCH to St. Landry Parish. For our child, we have been working with the St. Landry Pupil Appraisal Center; we had our first Louisiana IEP meeting last week. It went well, and a few changes were made towards helping our child improve and become more independent in staying on task. We will evaluate the changes at the next six-weeks progress report period.

My 3 year old grandson has no where to attend school. He has been asked to leave 5 day cares including a head start program. It is appalling that in a metropolis city like NOLA that there is no place for these children who seem to be an annoyance to all day cares and schools. Isn't there anyone who cares? Shame on our school system and School Board for leaving these very special children behind. We live in Metairie and are still looking for a school that will accomodate our little angel. At this point we are desperate for answers.

So his wife drove her to Texas every day to shool. I meet the child who is now grown and I thought she was noral intill her brother told me she deaf. She can talk and read lips. It blow me away For I had a sister in law and her husbant who was schooled here in Louisiana and they can not talk but make sounds and they can not read lips. Just do the hand signs. Louisiana is so bad at schools.

i have a high functioning child with asperger and we live in madisonville. He is currently enrolled in the madisonville public school system. He is in an inclusion setting all day, however, he struggles with social skills. The school special ed dept does not recognize "social skills" as an academic need, therefore, they do not address this need in the IEP. The student then suffers and feels isolated. I do know that mandeville has 2 schools that are a litte more in tune with high functioning ASD children - Magnolia Trace Elementary and Pontchatrain Elementary - hope this helps

If you don't mind me asking how old is your son? I am a mother of a 13 year old autistic son myself here in the Greater New Orleans area. My son did have a brief opportunity to attend Chartwell. Chartwell, if you are familiar with the city is located in uptown New Orleans attached to St. Stephen's Catholic School and does great work with autistic students.

The only catch is that the tuition is so high per semester that it will give you a nose bleed. And if you are like the rest of us struggling parents with special needs children then you know exactly how frustrating it is to want the best for your child educationally and not be able to afford the cost, and currently there are not scholarships, or grants to apply for these services for our children.

I have resided in New Orleans, Louisiana since the summer of 1995 and have not had much success at all with finding proper services for my son. It has been an uphill battle with the School Board and other agencies locally which all claim to be providing these fairytale services to our children. The majority are either under funded, or poorly staffed and have absolutely no clue. It's sad to say but truthfully families are relocating to other states which are able to produce results with the autistic children.

Louisiana needs to wake up and get a clue because if not our children are the ones who suffer!

I have a great nephew that is moving to the Baton Rouge area and I am trying to help my neice locate a school or home for her autistic child, who also has a seizure disorder. She is presently in Arkansas and there is no school to take him. He can be mainstreamed into a regular classroom but needs assistance all the time. Please tell me that there is a boarding school close to the area in which she can enroll him and be able to work. She is a single mom.

Did you move to Opelousas? Have you found any resources for three-year old high functioning children in the area?
