Jena is a GREAT place to call home. I have lived here my entire life and wouldn't have it any other way. There are no Catholic schools here but there is one I believe in Alexandria, which is about a 45 minute commute. The public schools are fine I went there as well. There are also two other choices, you can send your kids to Fellowship Elementary or Nebo Elementary, which is about 10 minutes from Jena. They are smaller than Jena Elementary and they go up to 8th grade and after they all combine at Jena High School. There are 2 or 3 dance studios here, which put on recitals and sort. We also have a program through one of the churches that have basketball, cheerleading, flag football, and soccer. It's great for the kids. I don't think you 'll have any problems finding a house but if you would like you can go to www.thejenatimes.net and look at the classifieds or www.jenalouisiana.com and check out the real estate. As for the Jena 6 stuff..the media hyped that up to where we look like a town full of racist. There is no tension here despite what is said. I was in school when this happened and in fact I know these boys well. All these people who have these negative things to say towards Jena obviously watched CNN and listed to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton..who in my opinion are the ones who stirred the pot and made all the trouble. I love it here. Like I said before a great place to call home.. If you have any other questions; you can just ask me.

Interesting how all the white folk interviewed at the time of the Jena 6 events said there was no racial tension in the town, and all the African Americans said there was....
Also interesting how people who highlight oppression are blamed by the oppressors as being the cause of the trouble! Something a bit upside down in these arguments. We've heard these arguments from whites since the days of slavery: blacks are happy with their lot and it's only outsiders who stir things up!!

You can ask both Caucasians (white folk in case you need help with that) and the African Americans now and they will tell you there is no tension. The ones that said there was, werethe parents of the 6 arrested; they probably are little biased. Conversations reguarding racism always goes back to slavery. Yes there were slaves BUT some of those were white as well. Plus that was a LONG time ago that has nothing to do with us now; that was our ancestors so don't punish everyone who is white. Get over it.

Hi, I live in Jena & have for the past 38 years. I love this town. I have raised all 3 of my kids here. It sounds like you might be from the city. Nothing against that. Jena is just a small town. The closest large city is Alexandria which is about 45 minutes away. There are several things for kids to do here. There are dance classes, school sports, cub scouts, girl scouts, & the churches here have gotten together with Upward Bound for different sports activities. There are several schools here. Jena Elementary, Nebo Elementary, Fellowship Elementary, & Temple Baptist School (which is private). Big city we aren't. But Jena is a good town. Please don't let the "Jena 6" crap deter you. This is a great place to live. Just let me know if you have anymore questions.
