for education..........then why are the test scores so bad????

My daughter has informed me that 77 out of 200 kids have failed the LEAP test in 8th grade at her school, Denham Springs Junior High.....WOW! They will have to attend summer school and retest to pass/move on to high school....seems REALLY high.

opinions?

I think you have found out about the wonderful education system in LA. Top 5? Can you only imagine the bottom dwellers? Why is LA constantly ranked at the bottom of every poll? Our kids are not getting the quality education that their piers are receiving in other parts of the country. So let's keep having our Mardi Gras, let's rennovate the SuperDome, let's debate such important issues like cockfighting and smoking. Then we can watch our education and healthcare systems go right down the toilet.

It appears that our lawmakers can't or don't want to address the real issues that are impacting our state. Not only are we having coastal erosion but we are having education erosion, insurance erosion, lack of good jobs erosion etc. And just as they have studied coastal erosion for decades and done little about it, they have not addressed the other important issues and for anyone who has lived here for several years can see the regression. It appears out state is built on "which festival is next so we can go eat, drink, and be merry". Kind of sounds like the games of ancient Rome. I am starting to run into kids who can't give back the correct change-a subtle but bad sign.

Does anyone see the irony in this post or is it just me? I've highlighted a particular hint.

Good catch, I realized my mistake after I typed it and I decided to leave it up to my peers to find it. Thanks!

Parents and students should not rely on the state for their single source for an education. One has to take the initiative to educate themselves.

The percent of 8th graders failing the LEAP test at Denham Springs Jr. High was actually worse than state average. The state average of 8th grade students not passing was 35%. The percent failing at Denham Springs Jr. High would be 38.5%.

The state average for 4th graders not passing the LEAP was 28%.

I can imagine how red my behind would be if I told my parents that I had failed this kind of test.

Times have changed though, and from what I gather, that kind of corporeal punishment might have social services breathing down your neck. For five minutes now, I've been sitting here wondering how to say this diplomatically. Education begins at home, but I'm afraid that there are just too many parents that don't understand this. But, then again, many of these parents are just repeating the mistakes of the earlier generations.

Restore a modicum of discipline to the schools, and pass laws that make parents PAY for their children to repeat a year and I think you'd begin to see a change. Raise teacher standards. Wait a minute, forget that, the NEA would keep the school systems tied up in the courts if standards for teachers were enforced anywhere.
