Apartments in Shreveport (apartment complexes, rent, crime)

I will b moving from Denver to Shreveport with my 1 yr old daughter.
I did some online search for the apartments. Iam confused abt the choices.
Which one is better- Island park apts or canebrake apts? I give preference to safety as I will b living alone with my daughter.

If someone could help me, I would appreciate it.

Well, actually Island Park are better than Canebrake in my opinion. There are a couple of reasons for this. For starters, while Island Park isn't the most aesthetically pleasing building (nice, but plain) I personally think Canebrake is less attractive from a design standpoint.

As far as convenience, Canebrake is right in the middle of it all. They're located directly behind the Auto Mall off what is undoubtedly one of Shreveport's busiest thoroughfares (Bert Kouns Industrial Loop.) This brings up the safety factor. While both are in safe areas with very little crime to speak of, traffic is much heavier around Canebrake than around Island Park and would be a safety issue to me. This is actually the very reason why I didn't rent an apartment on Bert Kouns back when I was living in apartments.

I lived in Spring Lake Point, which are just around the corner off Line Avenue in the Spring Lake subdivision. Still very convenient, quiet, safe, and nice, but a lot cheaper per month. They're about 20-25 years old but very well taken care of and they have a fitness center/clubhouse, mail centers, etc.

Island Park is where you want to be. My daughter has lived there for over a year and just loves it. The design is similar to the villages seen in tropical islands with a light green paint, white shutters, and palm trees----easy, breezey. They are a little more expensive than others, but included is basic cable and an enclosed garage (these would cost $40 and $75 at other places) which allows entrance to your unit from the garage. No need to venture outside. It is in a very scenic area near the Red River, yet convenient to everything.

I got arrested at Island Park at about 3:00 am one Tuesday...

Just saying that, at least in my experience, both of the apartment complexes that you mentioned have a very young resident profile. Not that it's a bad thing, you just can expect to have a lot of activity there, and I wouldn't plan on having very many quiet weekend evenings.

My advice would be to get a little further south, off of Youree between Stratmore and Flournoy-Lucas. Check out the patio homes in Appletree, and the townhomes in Peppertree/Settlers Park/whatever else they call the little communities down there. There is much more of a family vibe there, still great security, and much quieter. Not to mention, a lot more house for your money than at the apartments at Island Park or Canebreak
