things for moms
I am from Slidell, moved away for college in 99, but my parents still live there. I can't speak of any specific group, but I can tell you some advice on where to look.
If you are looking for something in your neighborhood, then it matters a LOT which neighborhood you choose. Slidell is organized almost exclusively into subdivisions, most of them have organized homeowner's associations of some kind. This is who you would go to for something organized with your neighbors in mind (like neighborhood picknics, crime watches, bonfires). Some sub-divisions have more robust associations than others, so you may want to choose a house based primarily on this, if you still have the option. It is important enough, that it is worth moving for. Associations tend to be responsable for setting laws and rules (which you will have to sign a contract for in more strict neighborhoods) that are designed to keep people happy or protect property values. Also some have a history of establishing civil laws that greatly benefit the people of the neighborhood. Most at least have a strong hand in zoning and land use. It is not uncommon for the first (and last) organization to tell you what you can't (or must) do with your property to be the homeowner's association of your neighborhood.
That aside, the single biggest place is church, which is a long southern tradition. Church is as much about socializing with others as anything to do with God. So if you are at all religious (or even not), it will be to your advantage (and perhaps enjoyment) to find some religious organization to be an active member of.
Beyond that, cross gate's athletic center on the east end of gauss blvd is a great place to meet people. I am not sure what they have for kids, but if they are at least 8, I know they will have sport style activities for them. Mor eimportantly though, it is where lots and lots of moms go to work out, and a decent place to stay connected.
The library used to be a good place for kids of all ages, including several story reading hours, but I don't know how it is now. Last I visited, it seemed ran down, and that was pre katrina.
Speaking of which, Katrina really changed the culture of Slidell, and a LOT of businesses are not open (nor going to be) a lot of the population are all new to slidell, and a lot of people are trying new things. Now is probably a better time then before to try and start your own. (I suggest by meeting people through church, your athletic club, homeowners association, pta, or whatever else you may do regularly)
Make nice with your neighbors as you are moving in (they should be making nice with you too) and find who has kids near you, and meet them. They should take good care of you.
