I just wanted to let everyone know that you can report someone that throws a cigarette or trash out of their vehicle. All you have to do is call 3-1-1 (also known as MetroCall). They will ask you for the following:

1. License plate number
2. Make/model of vehicle and the color of it
3. Intersection you witnessed it
4. Time it occurred

It's that simple. The City of Louisville will send notice to the owner of the vehicle that a complaint has been filed. I'm not sure of the ramifications of the letter but it's a nice system that MetroCall offers.

I'm not sure why all these cigarette smokers feel it's okay to throw their buds out onto the streets and sidewalks. These are folks that most likely wouldn't dare throw out paper waste but they don't think twice about the cigarette butt. These intersections at redlights are down right disgusting if you look down on the pavement.

Thank you! I saw a woman through a fast food bag full of trash out the window by the airport the other day, it made me so mad! Glad to know there's an outlet for reporting these things.

Unfortunately, the only ramification is probably going to be that it costs us, the taxpayers about $10.00 to processing and send that letter. It's probably not going to change the actions of the person at all.

This thread hits on one of my favorite rants. Not just cigarette butts, but litter in general.

While sadly, this may be true, there is the possibility that person will think twice once they realize there are lots of people that care, and we're watching.
Personally, it makes me want to follow that person home, wait until dark, and empty a couple of big ol' dirty ashtrays in their frontyard. But that's just me...

Lets not forget if there is a court date the person who filed the complaint will have to show up to testify at the hearing. That's always a fun way to spend a day and when you have to take off work in order attempt to get petty justice

Litter is a huge problem here in the burbs where we live in CT. I have not a clue why people will toss ANYTHING out the window let alone a cigarette especially dangerous with the dry weather we have been experiencing. Before you report the litter "drop" ask the police if you have to give your name or any other info about yourself prior to reporting the issue. I know they can more than likely see your name and phone number but there are some whackos out there who might not be happy they got reported..know what I mean? If it can be done anonymously then GO FOR IT.
Kinda off the subject....why would anyone want to spend the cash on cigarettes now anyhow? They are 10.75 a pack here. I stopped smoking about 6 years ago and was paying a tad over 6 dollars for them...maybe if the price keeps going up, more people will quit and then no worries about tossing butts out the car window, right?

the problem i see is what's to stop me from reporting someone who is just a bad driver or maybe cuts me off? people could, and probably will, just lie about it to exact some petty revenge.

I agree with kytoaz. When I worked for the state highway department we would find a lot of trash dumped off the side of some back road and we would find a piece of paper or envelope with the person's name on it. Tried turning it in a couple times but all the culprit had to do was say they hired some guy to haul the trash off for them. The police would check that guy out and get "I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't haul trash for anybody". The police got to where they wouldn't even check it out any more and we (highway crew) would have to go pick it up if it was on the state right-of-way.

I would think using your camera phone would be "that simple." That ploy was used on me going down a designated road in Louisville KY when the dumb-dumbs didn't realize they were blocking a "thru-way." Loved it!!! They thought they had something when they took the photo...............uhhh........nooo.
