Hello! I am 42 yrs old All of my children are adults and I have grandchildren. I will love to be able to move away from Illinois. I have grown up here most of my life. Something within me has been telling me for a few years now that it is time for me to move and make a new start. I really want to move to Louisville Ky. But, I don't know anything about the location. Now I have a god brother and his wife that have been living there for some years now. But, he is always on the road driving semi. I want to know if this location is a good one for someone that is trying to make a fresh start in life. Thank you for all reply's

Interesting. I moved from Illinois five years ago to "make a new start" in Louisville. I had never been to Louisville or even knew it existed, but through my research something about this place was calling me. Then I made a couple visits to the city and I felt right--I don't know how, because I didn't know anyone or anything here. You have the benefit of knowing some people in Louisville, so take advantage of that! I found this place to be a good place to make that "new start" because compared to the Chicago area it is less expensive and easier to get around. People in Louisville seem to be open and curious to newcomers--can't say the same for New Albany and southern Indiana but that's a different story. Yes, people are going to notice if you have an accent or haven't heard of certain places (or don't know what's the big deal with UK vs. U of L), so keep that in mind if you're someone who is concerned about "standing out." We get transplants down here but not like the larger cities. By the way, what are you thinking about doing for work?

Just know this about the people of Louisville. We will care about you, we'll ask you questions, not to judge you, but know you, to invite you. If you are insulted easily by people who wish you well, even with words such as God Bless you, then stay away. If you move to Louisville, come be a part of us. Don't come with your changes for us, get to know us, give us a chance, we'll give you our hearts, and occasionally our advice and opinions.

Living in Louisville is easy, but be wise. If you must rent, rent intelligently. Rent close to your work, don't know where you are going to work yet, then rent short-term until you know where. Commuting in Louisville is not always easy or cheap.

tom, your "wisdom" never ceases to amaze. so you're saying "come here and be assimilated into exactly what we are but in no way bring any of your culture with you, and if you're not a Christian, stay the hell out". that's quite a welcome mat you've laid out there.

There are 500 threads on this, so Ill be brief . . .
My Wife and I suffer from incorrigeble wanderlust~ We cant stay in one place. We have moved around like people with warrants. We bought a house and finally settled in Louisville. Might not be the best at anything, but all things that matter to us, better than anywhere else we've been. I would say if you cant make a new start here, its going to be almost impossible anywhere else. Others opinions will differ, Im stickin' to mine

There are tons of transplants, mostly from Northern states in the NE suburbs. When I drive down Westport Rd I see nearly as many out of state license plates as Kentucky plates. Illinois is definitely one of the more common plates I see along with Ohio, New York, Connecticut, and for some reason a lot of Rhode Island, too. Seems like Michigan is the most common transplant origin. They are everywhere.

Well, it amazes me that you have stayed. Louisville happens to have a very large population of Jews, a contingent of Muslims, Buddhist, & Hindu's.

Yes, to the OP, I am not embarrassed to invite you to come to church with me, but if you don't want to go, or if you choose to attend any other denomination or religious service, so be it.

And yes, kytoaz, maybe if you would instead of fighting the facts of faith with attitudes of insult, maybe we wouldn't have such a high murder rate in Louisville. Maybe we wouldn't need to release hundreds of more than petty criminals simply because there isn't enough cell space.

Yelp, kytoaz, I'll take my version 100 times to your version once.

Tom is actually from rural KY. Owensboro. I would say his views are in line with many rural Kentuckians. All in all, he is entitled to his opinion. So please, let's not stray from the subject. I also echo his sentiment that Louisville is a friendly place. I think his statements are more along the lines of, do not come to Louisville and complain there's no pro sports or not enough shopping etc. Enjoy it for the great place it is and try to make it better.

Louisville is a very friendly city with lots of things to do, and with friendly open people.
Have a visit or two and check things out... or maybe rent an apartment for a short period,
to see how you like it, before buying a house. Welcome to Kentucky.
