Question Louisville, Ky

I am currently considering a job position in Louisville. I would like to live outside of the city. Any suggestions on a small rural town nearby. I have several animals and would like to purchase some land to live on. I would like to keep my commute to the city under 45 minutes. I am not a city dweller and am not looking for city comforts, just a place me and my animals can live. Any recommendations? Thanks!

My family lived in the Crestwood area for many years. It is a nice area and only approx. 20-25 miles from downtown loiusville.

There are several locations you can look at, Shepardsville and Mount Washington are both a 30-45 min drive into downtown Louisville. Bardstown is past Mount Washington, a beautful area. Past Crestwood which is about 45 minutes away is LaGrange. New home growth is very big there. You could also move to southern Indiana. Greenville, Corydon, Lanesville, are all going to be in that 45 minute drive. Jeffersonville and New Albany Indiana sit right on the river across from downtown Louiville. I don't know where you are moving from. But look at the express way system and talk to a real estate person about the commute. The distance isn't long, but the traffic can be terrible. Best of luck to you

Default Spring Mills

I used to live in KY, and I've heard of a nice town called Spring Mills, pop. 380. It's about 10 miles outside of Louisville....good luck in Kentucky!!

You should definitely consider the Elizabethtown area. There are a lot of people who commute from ETown to Louisville for work. It is not a bad drive at all. Etown is a great upscale small community.

Etown, upscale? Uh..Well, I don't agree, but that's ok.

I'd second the Bardstown suggestion, but with traffic, that may put you a few minutes ourtside your limit.

Sorry I can be more of a help to you as I don't know many of the smaller towns outside of Louisville. One idea you might try: Google a map of Louisville and check out the surrounding towns (good idea of distances, etc...). You may also think about taking a few vacation days to visit the local community and drive around to see what each community is like. Hope you find what you are looking for and hope you enojy our part of the USA ;-)

Be careful with these aproximate distance suggestions. I have noticed on one of your reply's to this thread that someone said it was 45 minutes from La Grange to Louisville, while on another one of my post responses someone said it was only 20 minutes from La Grange to Louisville [which did seem pretty optimistic], best to both look on Google Earth and mapquest.com to verify distance from point A - B, and then remember that doesn't account for any traffic.

You can't really determine this since "Louisville" now covers a whole county. From La Grange, you can get to the edge of Louisville in 15 minutes. In reality, this whole area is part of the Louisville metro area, including La Grange and even further really. In the morning, traffic on I-71 south from La Grange inwards is quite bad for a city Louisville's size due to inadequate roads (not many cities this size have 60's era, 2 lane freeways leading into downtown). It is 26 miles from La Grange to downtown Louisville, so this commute easily takes 45 minutes in the mornings from a nice subdivision like L'Espirit in La Grange to say, the Aegon Center office tower in downtown Louiville. Without traffic, this same commute could be made in 25 minutes:

Louisville - Google Maps

Click "get directions" and type in "La Grange, KY"

There is little way you can make it from La Grange to downtown Louisville in less than 20 minutes without going over 80 mph the entire way.

For those who care, LaGrange is located at Interstate 71 exit 22. So as STX said, if you drive reasonably and don't hit the drive time backups that generally exist between I-265 (traffic lessens if your commute uses I-264 "Watterson Expressway"), you can make LaGrange to the I-65 at the Kennedy Bridge in dead center downtown Louisville in 16 to 18 minutes. Sligo/Pendleton and lots of open space in Henry, Trimble, or eastern Oldham County is located at Exit 28 and there is even more land available at Campbellsburg which if my memory is Exit 34, with Carroll County at Exit 42 & Carrollton at Exit 44.

STX has hit the nail on the head. He speaks with excellent authority.
