The bigger the city, the more likely problems like this will ensue. Why do you think cities like LA, New York City, and Chicago have such high crime rates, etc.?

You point is well taken. Large cities aren't attractive to those wanting to avoid 'high crime rates'.

If you look at the crime rate for the urban service area of Jefferson County (a la the old city limits of Louisville) and compare it to the cities of NYC, LA, or Chicago, Louisville's crime rate is, in fact, higher. Fact.

New York's crime rate is now the lowest it's been since records began to officially be taken by the city in 1963. It's murder rate is the lowest since record-keeping began and, in fact, (unofficially) since WWII. NYC had fewer than 500 murders last year, giving it a murder rate of approximately 4.75/100,000. (Even Jefferson County's rate altogether was about 75% higher.) At the rate murders are occurring so far this year, it is very possible that NYC could have fewer than 450 murders, giving it a murder rate of approximately 4.6/100,000. That is lower than LA, Chicago and...Louisville. Fact.

I can also honestly say that I feel much safer in Harlem than on Chicago's southwest side. I would also probably feel safer in Washington Heights, Spanish Harlem (now East Harlem), Fort Greene, or Jamaica than Chicago's Southside or East Los Angeles or Compton.

Now, back to Bullitt County...

My point, since you quoted it, was that larger cities in general have worse violent crime rates (including murder rates) than smaller cities. There are many theories as to why only NYC's rates are going down. They range from better medical treatment, less people, and less crime reporting, to increased police presence.

As for Louisville's rates, it would have been nice to see where you're getting your statistics. Normally when comparing cities, it's done with annual and longer term statistics than just the busy summer months that Louisville has experience. Murders in Louisville are certainly not confined to the western portion of the city http://www.city-data.com/forum/louis...declining.html

For violent crime rates and murder, I'd take Louisville over Cinnci any day. Cinnci is like DC where lots of people work but not many live. The population of Cinnci is at approx. 340,000 where as Louisville's metro (Jefferson co) is roughly 620,000 (nobody knows for sure). In 2007, Cinnci saw 63 murders which puts the rate at 18.75 per 100,000 Louisville in 2007 had a sharp increase to 71 which works out to 11.45 (Cinnci in 2007 had a 61% higher murder rate than Louisville).

For overall violent crime rates in 2007, Louisville was at 684 per 100,000 people vs. 1055 per 100,000 for Cinnci. Hi bisard2,
I really enjoy this forum because there are so many different perspectives, and everyone is honest.
That said, it's hard to offer any really valuable help until we know your parameters. Where do you work? Are you willing to drive, and how far? How much to spend? What are your preferences, and what do you have to have?
I grew up in Jefferson, lived 10 yrs in Bullitt (Zoneton) and 25 in Nelson. There are good things about all three. Nelson has good schools and nice people. Bardstown is a beautiful little city, but if you want to be closer to Louisville, you might want to look in Cox's Creek.
And, there are some really beautiful properties in the hilly country around southwest Jefferson County. I look for those property values to be really stable in the coming years. Fort Knox is in the process of a major restructuring, and that will be bringing in thousands of new people. I look for that area to be economically healthly, no matter where the rest of the market goes.
Good luck!

The other main difference about Cincinnati and Louisville is that Cincy does not count all of its suburbs like Louisville does. Louisville was trying to cheat the census and the census is saying Louisville is 26th largest city. If Cincinnati counted all of Hamilton Co. it would have 800,000 people versus Louisville saying its 16th with 705,000 people. Louisville cannot count Prospect, Anchorage, Jeffersontown because they are not statistically part of the city due to being independent cities.

That being said, Cincy's inner core behind the skyscrapers mostly consists of riff raff and people with long criminal histories. Outside of that main area of wretchedness, the Cincy metro area has 2.2 million people versus Louisville having 1.3 million for stats purposes.

You'll find better jobs and opportunities in N. Ky and Cincy than Louisville. Actual paying jobs and careers versus Louisville where poverty is the rule for 20 plus percent of the locals. Visit Sperlings Best Places and Punch in some cities and see where Louisville ranks in incomes versus Nashville, Indy, Cincy, etc.
