I live close to Shelbyville Road, right off of Fairmeade. You are right, I have not done enough exploring at all! Haven't been to any of those boutiques or anything! Still trying to get my bearings in this town and figure out what & where the good, local stuff is I guess. I've been in Dallas the past 13 years, so this is a big change for me! Was hoping I might learn about some specific subdivisions I should check out, even within St. Matthews!

The first area to explore is the area known as heart of St Matthews. Explore the shops in this area where Lexington Road, Shelbyville Road, Wesport Road, Frankfort Ave, and Chenoweth Lane come together. Also a few on Wallace Ave and St Matthews Ave, and even a few around Breckenridge lane. Its kind of its own "mini" downtown, and is very safe and walkable, with the wonderful Seneca Park nearby which is packed with people in the warm months, especially on the 1 mile track around the park.

Don't be scared to walk in stores or restaurants if you don't know what they are...owners are usually always friendly! Thats part of the beauty of a locally owned store. If you want more specific streets in the area I am not really sure of all the neighborhood names, but I really love the area around Canons Lane and Lexington Road.

Meander from where you are on back streets towards Lexington Rd. I know there are houses for sale all over around here, and at very good prices. Check near Seneca Park... And in the triangle of Frankfort, Lexington. Our son just bought in that area for under 200. The layouts in this area are such that a big yard might be next to a postage stamp. And as I said before: check out the wonderful oddity that is that expanse between Frankfort and Brownsboro.

BTW I walk 4 miles every morning, starting around 6 am - up Grandview, around the Seneca Loop, down Lexington and Shelbyville. I meet old folks and young folks, black people, white people, lots of dogs, people at all mph. It's friendly, safe, delightful...

Default Clifton and Crescent Hill very liberal

I would recommend you look at the Clifton and Crescent Hill areas of Louisville. Very liberal walking neighborhood with lots of shops, galleries, resturants, etc...

Check out Mardi Gras event this evening on Frankfort Avenue. Street performers, fire eater and ball at the Mellwood arts Center.

I think you'd like it.

This is some great info to get me going on my house hunt, as well as my search to get more familiar with the city. I think I'll really like it here!

Default Love Audubon Park!

I live in Audubon Park and LOVE it. It is the King of walking areas and there are all species of dogs! Big Ones! It's actually an historic forrest. As for alternative lifestyles, there are gays living here and owning businesses on Preston Highway, which must be terribly convenient. I especially love the two little shops at the Preston entrance to the park. We could use some more restaurants but the area just outside the park on Poplar Level is coming along. Thanks Panera Bread Co and Starbucks! We moved here in 2001 from Washington DC and it was quite a transition but worth the lower salary and lack of city excitement. We found other things to do once we got used to the slower pace. Now is a great time to buy since the lower interest rates will help overcome the higher prices of homes in this area. You should definitely be able to find something in your price range. The house just across from the Audubon Park Country Club is for sale by owner. I saw it when I was out walking yesterday. What a great walk, snow blowing and so quiet. Good luck.
