We are wanting to make a move from Florida and are considering Louisville area. I grew up in the north and cannot stand the heat and humidity here any longer. We are considering Louisville for a job transfer. We are very quiet and keep to ourselves but obviously will need to be out and about mingling with the locals and wonder how accepting of alternate lifestyles is the area in general. We would look to live outside the city as acreage is a must for us - we have competition sport dogs, Search & Rescue dogs and horses.

Thank you in advance for any input!

I don't see you having any issues or problems in Louisville.

Louisville definitely has plenty of options for areas outside of the city for land. Southern Indiana is a great place to look and is cheaper. Places like Sellersburg, and Floyds Knobs are nice.

There are plenty of "gay" bars in Louisville now. It's becoming more popular and accepted. Still has a ways to go like most places.

One thing you mentioned is heat and humidity. Louisville isn't much better than Florida honestly. Louisville is on the Ohio Valley and the heat/humidity is killer sometimes.

The Highlands is the most gay friendly part of town then Crescent Hill is a close second. You'll do fine in those two areas. Louisville is becoming accepting of lgbt but it's taking some work. The south end of Louisville is pretty conservative, I don't recommend Bulliet County which is dye in the wool red republican. The east end of Louisville has conservative spots too but I've noticed that the east ender conservatives are more fiscally conservative than social so a lot of them don't care. The Highlands has the bulk of the gay bars and hangouts though and all in all its the best part in Louisville in terms of just about everything. I'm actually disappointed about moving out of the highlands and into another part of town but I still work in the highlands so it works out.

You won't be escaping the humidity. You'll only be escaping it year round. With winter comes the ice storms, bitter cold, and local panic everytime the news even mentions snow that results in grocery stores being wiped out of supplies. Also, Louisville is ranked #1 for allergies.

My advice would be to take a trip up here and drive around the whole city. See the good and the ugly.

Well said.

Good rule of thumb for LGBT types in Louisville is to stay within the border of east of I-65 within the I-264 loop. The downtown and nearby early suburbs are the most open and welcoming areas of town, and likely where the concentration of LGBT people and supporters live. As others have said, avoid the southern part of the city and far east suburbs, and you'll do just fine in Louisville.

I suppose it's all a matter of perspective so coming from Florida it might be different but the climate is usually not one of Louisville's selling points I think. Louisville has a lot going for it and the old city is very LGBT friendly, and really a lot of the rest of the city, but its still quite humid and hot, which is a shame and probably holds it back to some extent. Would a gay married couple (Asian and Hispanic) with a daughter fit in well in Louisville?

^You shouldn't have any problems. Especially in areas like the Highlands.

Thank You! We don't have plans to move away from California since all of our family live here, but I was just curious to know how a very diverse family like ours would be perceived in a medium-sized Midwestern or Southern city. I've seen someone mention in another thread that "their" community accepts gay couples as long as they don't make out in public, which I found offensive, since we're very private people and don't show much affection in public anyway. We might have a quick hug when I see him off at the airport or something but that's about it. Louisville sounds like a nice city, and we would definitely like to visit sometime.
