Jefferson Memorial Forest has really good hiking trails which I hiked on before with a lady who was training to hike on the Appalachians. Not really safe out there tho cause a friend of mine who sister lives out there in Fairdale won't hike there anymore after finding a body while they were hiking. I've heard gun shots out there too. This is outside and way outside of Jefferson County.

The memorial forest visitor center is a good first stop and inquiring about safety is a sound idea. Horine portion requires check-in to get access to the gate. The overall forest is over 6,000 acres so labeling all of it safe or not safe shouldn't be made. In the weekends the crowds are larger abd that may ease concerns but ANY park that has multiple people in a car, especially a while, is usually watched closer than the old lady walking her two dogs without a leash.

Jefferson memorial forest is almost all in Jefferson county and is one of the largest urban forests in the U.S. Fairdale has a few rough spots like many suburbs.
