How do taxes work in Louisville? Does it make a difference if you live in the city or county?

If you live in the county but work in the city, you'll pay a reduce city wage tax. You won't have to pay the school portion of the city tax but you will pay the county tax of where you reside in addition to the city wage tax. Hope this helps.

Is the tax based on where you live or work?

If you live in the city, you'll pay the city wage tax regardless of where you work.

If you live in a county but work inside the city, you'll pay your county tax as well as a reduced city wage tax.

If you live and work outside of Louisville you'll just pay your normal county tax based on where you live.

Is it tax advantageous to live in Southern Indiana, or are they roughly similar?

You do pay a 2% occupational tax if you work inside Jefferson County. I also had to pay a small tax to Sheperdsville/Bullitt County when I worked at Zappos for a couple of weeks.

I worked in Hardin County and worked on Ft. Knox and I did not pay a tax.

I think if you live in Indiana it's very similar. May get more taken up front but you get more back later. Car insurance is much cheaper.
