How's the job market in Louisville and surrounding areas? (Lexington: apartment, to rent)

Hello everyone! My husband and I are considering a move to Louisville. He is officially out of the Military as of yesterday. He had been applying for jobs since September of last year in the Nashville area and Kentucky but unfortunately, he hasn't landed a job yet. We are starting to think that the reason why he can't land a job is because we are out of state(currently living in Arkansas) and their priorities are the locals. Right now, he is working part-time at a hardware store. We are thinking of an option to just get transfer to Louisville and once we get there, continue to look for a job and hopefully find a permanent one but I know it sounds risky.

He was an aircraft maintenance technician in the Air Force so he is looking for a similar job or any kind of maintenance technician job.

Also, the reason why we are considering Louisville is he would like to join the ANG and he's already in contact with someone there.

The pay in Louisville is higher than neighboring RTW states, IN and TN, but its not as high as up north. If you like like Louisville, you wont do any better anywhere close. I think if you went up to NKY/Cinci the wages for that type of work would be a little higher, but its not Louisville Quality of life = Priceless

Thank you, thunderkat. We are driving up there for his assessment in a week from TN. My husband has a family in TN and Lexington. I'm really hoping he get this job.

We will be visiting there in a week, where should we look at for houses to rent and how much is the average rent?

I think most employers worry that if they offer the job to someone out of area it's 50/50 and whether they'll take it. I would think UPS would need job skills like that at their Louisville world hub. Rent here is pretty reasonable compared to most areas. Houses will still run you over $1000/ month in nicer areas but a two bedroom apartment could be from $700 to $1000 a month in good areas, sometimes less.

Thank you so much for your input. I was thinking that. I told my husband to put something about not seeking for relocation assistance in his cover letter or something. Maybe we should just move there. We are open to live outside Louisville if it means cheaper rent, so if you have any recommendations please let me know. We have a lab and a boxer so I'm not sure about renting an apartment.

You also might try a temp agency like Aerotek, a lot of times it's easier to get hired on as a temp.
