Louisville's very fortunate to have such a great urban website like Broken Sidewalk. If you haven't been I suggest you spend some time on there. They recently wrote several great articles detailing what they called the best and worst of Louisville. I've attached a few that talk about how great the parks system and Norton's Commons are. On the other hand, they comment on how badly all the urban renewal and the lack of a "center" square hurt the cities urbanism. The urban renewal article is perhaps the best one I've seen detailing that practice in Louisville.

Best: Louisville's Olmsted parks are the gift that's been giving back for a century — Broken Sidewalk

Best: Norton Commons is teaching the suburbs how to walk again — Broken Sidewalk

Worst: Louisville went crazy with the wrecking ball in the name of "Urban Renewal" — Broken Sidewalk

Worst: Louisville's original layout didn't encourage the synergy that could have made the city even greater — Broken Sidewalk

I've been a big fan of Broken Sidewalk and read it regularly. There are a lot of good urban developments going on that the local news barely mentions.

Clearly the biggest mistake Louisville ever made was tearing down so much of the urban core. Everything done now is an attempt just to get back to where the city used to be. The West End was once a thriving mixed race area with local businesses and a booming music district. I'm not sure we can ever get it back.

That is a fantastic site!
Thanks for posting it!

Unrelated, we are moving back to PA, and I am very sad and upset. This was the greatest place we have ever lived, anywhere I go after this is going to be a let-down. Reading Broken Sidewalk reminds me why . . .

Why the move then?

Its personal and financial.
We want to be close to our grandchild and be there for our kids, but also, as I have posted here before, we are coming up on retirement. My Wife who is the "A" job in our family, is worth so much more in PA, it is financially prudent for us. KY's retirement process for KY educators is arcane and backwards, only allowing an educator to collect 3/4 of what they might get in another state. My Wife is still vested in the PA system from a long time ago, so with the 5 years she has left to work, she can make considerably more in salary and for retirement.
So, tldr version > family and financial.
It's hard for me because I do miss kids, but the prospect of going back to PA with the crazy COL, weather and the intangible vibe/mean factor, make this a very depressing prospect for me. Spoiled by the Highlands, we will never find a neighborhood like this, up there. We tried and tried to get them to come here, but they both have great jobs and doing very well, so they dont want to leave. If you are still reading at this point, thanks for sticking it out! This could take a few months, or over a year depending on when/if a district offers my wife a contract. So, I have a little more time to enjoy this fabulous city. Even in PA, I will be it's biggest (well 2nd biggest ) supporter.
