True, but buying drugs from criminals should be. When you buy their drugs, you help them pay hit men and help them buy burglary tools, etc. You become an important part of their criminal enterprise. It becomes just as important for law enforcement to take you out of action as to take them out of action. For that reason, drug users should be put in concentration camps in the desert, and we should find some competent guards who can make sure no drugs will get to those camps. The camps should be big enough to hold millions, if we want to get serious about winning the war on drugs.

I wonder how much of the tremendous spike in homicides in Louisville and other cities has to do with drug cartels loosing money to marijuana legalization? I've heard heresy that the drug cartels are loosing marijuana revenue and are trying to switch weed users to heroin. Jefferson County is somewhere around 120 homicides for 2016 which is way more than the usual 45 to 65, something is going on.

I like the idea of not wasting anymore tax dollars. Like any war if you're not going to win, you should get out

Additionally, prisons/jails are overcrowded with non-criminals. Prisons/Jails SHOULD ONLY BE USED for people who are a threat to other's in society. If they commit crimes while on drugs, than they should go to prison/jails for their CRIMES.

Someone who has not hurt other people, but only hurt himself/herself, shouldn't have felony records, prison sentences, etc.
Exactly but sadly some people think 40+ year war can be won by throwing even more tax dollars at it....Boggles my mind

It can be won if we finally get serious about it. 40+ years of wasting money doesn't tell us anything except that we have a tendency to waste money. People need to understand that a war needs to be fought competently to win it. Until they understand that, the money will keep getting wasted. Unless all drugs become legal, which doesn't seem likely.

If all drug users go into a big concentration camp in the desert, and we make sure no drugs can get to them, how would that not win the war on drugs? The providers of drugs would no longer have income from them. The drug business would no longer be viable. We wouldn't have to keep the drug users in the concentration camp forever. Just for the duration of the war on drugs.

Or maybe someone could invent a chemical that permanently changes your skin color to a bright cartoon color. And we could contaminate the drug supply with it. To help identify drug users, and to motivate people to stop using drugs, to keep their natural skin color.

You can't just throw a bunch of human beings in the desert...you'd have to feed them, house them, etc. You're talking a ton of money, probably more than just incarceration. You'd probably have to build prison-like facilities. If you are willing to do that, you might as well just create large rehab facilities instead.

Skin color/identification. That basically makes people unemployable. Part of the issue with creating felonies on drug users, is they become unemployable. Unemployable marked people doesn't help us as a society.

Sure they will. They will sit begging in the gutters. People will see them and know what happened. It will strongly motivate people not to be consumers of illegal drugs. If nobody consumes illegal drugs, where will the illegal drug business get the income to survive? The whole giant criminal drug industry will go down the drain. It will take a very big load off our criminal justice system. We will no longer have to incarcerate drug criminals. People of the future will be employable, and will spend their time working instead of sitting in prison cells. All because of some cartoon characters in the gutters.

Concentration camps are much cheaper than prisons. The inmates can eat cheap gruel. The "ton of money" would not be a problem because we would save many times more on prisons.

Would you rather have our present system, in which we execute our drug users by selling them heroin till they overdose? Concentration camps may seem oppressive, but they're less oppressive than executions.

Default No one is really trying to win

This is America and way too many people are making way too much money for there ever to be an end to the war on drugs or the drug problem itself. Some are in the drug trade directly, others are being paid to do nothing about it, and many more are making bank running prisons, feeding prisoners, making drug tests, running drug screenings and data bases, defending drug offenders, and dozens of other markets that the illusion of a war on drugs has created. Focusing on users and low level dealers is like using your King and Queen to to capture your opponents pawns except for in the case of drugs the pawns are extremely easy to replace
