I haven't found this to be true relative to cities of similar size.

Guess we disagree. I even did a fencing meetup and a hiking meetup! Just look at the amount of groups. All kinds of weird interests with dozens of members.

What other cities of "similar size" have you lived in? I swear long time natives are Louisville's biggest naysayers and could be the reason for Louisville's "can't do" attitude. I am not saying you specificially, but I see that out of a lot of Louisville expatriots.

Just out of thin air, lets take a group that "stereotypically" one wouyld not think they'd have in Louisville...atheists

Atheists and Agnostics of Richmond (Richmond, VA) | Meetup

A group in Richmond has less than HALF the amount of members as a similar Louisville group which has 1231.

Louisville Atheists and Freethinkers (Louisville, KY) | Meetup

Louisville and Richmond don't get any closer in size and culture, and we have even seen many on here try to "trump" Richmond over Louisville. I really think Louisville's biggest problem is itself. It reminds me of Detroit a great deal in this regard, but the mid sized city version.
