Depends if you're just a tourist and want to see the sights or visiting a friend/family member. I've worked and driven in the West End of Louisville/Portland both day and night and have never been bothered. But, it might not be a place I'd frequent at night as it has a reputation for crime.

I've never felt unsafe in downtown, daytime or night, honestly. But I do keep my wits about me and pay attention to my surroundings. Some areas around Churchill Downs could be sketchy at night. Highlands is generally safe at night but again, pay attention. It's a popular place with many restaurants and bars. I'd say there isn't an area like, let's say, Orange Mound.

Louisville in general is very safe and the majority of crime is segmented to the western side of the city. As was said above, it never is a bad idea to always have your wits about you, but in general for visiting and doing tourist activities, there's really not much you'd need to avoid. Just have a good time.

I've never really felt unsafe in Louisville. I have a friend who does comedy shows I went to all the time on the (infamous) West End (30th-45th Streets) and never had an issue.

I agree with the others, it's mainly the western parts of town, known to as locals as the 'West End'. I'd say over half the violent crime happens roughly west of 15th street. There's a lot of history behind this, and it's steeped in a lot of racial segregation that many other cities in the country have dealt with. The rest of the city, downtown, and surrounding neighborhoods are actually gentrifying by many definitions of the word. Louisville unfortunately is still a highly segregated city, racially and economically. Overall the city is safe though, I've lived here two years, and never felt unsafe. Even driving through many West End neighborhoods you wouldn't feel unsafe, but it's just suffered decades of inequality and social problems. Walking around downtown, East Market District, Old Louisville, Germantown, Highlands. All great neighborhoods that I've felt safe in.

Avoid the “west end” and all will be dandy.

Louisville is a safe city overall. The many many times I’ve been in downtown at night after drinking, basketball games, concerts, etc...I’ve never felt in danger or the least bit threatened. The West End is where most of the crime happens.

And then this happened:

A man in his 30s was shot dead in front of his wife Sunday evening in the Cherokee Triangle neighborhood.

Around 8 p.m, officers responded to a call of a shooting in the 1200 block of Everett Avenue. On scene they found the man dead, according to Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley.

The man and his wife were walking home after visiting a relatives house, Smiley said. They came across two individuals and an “altercation” occurred, leading to the man's death.

So you’re saying that if one incident occurs it means the area is unsafe? It’s definitely unusual for something for something like this to occur in this area.

If this is your logic, then most towns/cities in America would be unsafe. While it’s unfortunate, it’s not common.

Agree....that homicide is kind of scary, as to my knowledge, it is pretty much the only one to occur in an upscale area on someone that the assailant presumably didn't know (however .

But it also says there was an altercation, etc. I am sure the wife can give a good eye witness account.

These little thugs are in every city, and an occasional random crime by them is not uncommon, nor surprising. But yes, overall Louisville is a very safe city.

I never said that. You are simply inferring it. I never said shootings were common in the Highlands.

Tragedy for those affected, for sure.
