Musician Moving To Louisville (Frankfort, Fern Creek: relocating, apartment, job)

I'm relocating to Louisville for a job with the symphony. I've been reading the forums here but would like additional thoughts about neighborhoods. I would like an apartment that is not part of a large corporate complex. Something in a house or building with a few units or something like that. Something unique and interesting but not too expensive. Also since I'm a musician, it has to be a place tolerant of practicing an instrument. I've heard that parts of downtown, Highlands, Cherokee Park, Crescent Hill, Clifton, Fern Creek, Bueschel and Jeffersonville are all ok. I'd like more specific information. Are there any neighborhoods, streets, areas that are particularly "artsy" or funky? Are there neighborhoods that have a larger population of artists, gays or young (or old) creative types? Also, safety is a concern as I am a single woman moving there alone. I have a car but would prefer to not have to fight traffic in the mornings more than I have to. I realize that living in the city comes dealing with traffic- that's fine, but if there's a place that is accessable to downtown more than another, that would be helpful to know also. I will be downtown some mornings and some nights. Thanks for the info.

There are 3 areas in Louisville that meet your criteria for artsy, tolerant, and affordable. Traffic in Louisville is actually quite light, so commuting from these areas would only take 5-15 minutes even in rush hour. and accessible to Downtown: Frankfort Ave

Old Louisville- the largest Victorian era Historic Preservation District in the US (48 sq blocks!), best public transit access in the city. Very affordable (1 br from $400 a month), south of Magnolia Ave safer than areas north of it.


The Highlands- a very dense collection of night clubs, restaurants, and funky shops located along a 4 mile stretch of Bardstown Rd/ Baxter Ave, traffic very bad on Friday/ Saturday evenings


Frankfort Ave- most affluent and safest area in the old city limits, has developed a nice restaurant and shopping scene, esp west of Ewing Ave. Close to major shopping areas in St Matthews
