Louisville on pace for record low homicide total
Jefferson County has only had 17 murders (inc a man shot by police) nearly half way through 2008 and is on pace for 45 murders.
Indianapolis has ALREADY had 40 murders this year

And who is the next innocent to become just another notch on the statistic belt?
Bragging or even noting in a positive light that 17 are unnecessarily dead in 4 months is not a good aspect of our society.
Instead of allowing tolerance of such a low number, why don't we scream about the pain of even one innocent death?

Come on, Tom. This isn't "podunkville." Its a real live city. There are gangs. Where there are gangs, there are murders. Case closed. Louisville is quite safe for a major city and the police should be commended for helping curtail crime and now murders. Let it be noted that NONE of these murders have been random acts of violence. They were either domestic or gang related, and as my mantra goes, over 90% of homicide victims PERSONALLY know their killer. I am happy to say that I live in one of the top 10 safest large cities in America.

17 dead people! MURDERED, innocent or not! Don't yell safe to me when children get shot dead while sitting in their bedroom, or on their front porch. I will not accept your tolerance of such a blight on our nation. No matter how "relatively" safe Louisville is, one murder a year is one too many! We must not tolerate such. No place is immune! Oldham County, Bullitt County, Spencer, Shelby, Floyd, or Clark.... not one of these places is immune to murder, but part of the reason Jefferson, especially west Jefferson has more murders is that unlike the rural counties, murder is "tolerated".

This is tomocox's hot button!
One murder is too many, I agree. But let's not minimize the news either. Being in the top ten is far, far better than living in the bottom ten. Sure, I want to be the #1 safest city in America, but I'm proud of the progress we're making.
One is too many and so is 17, but it sure beats the heck out of 40. As stx says, we live in the real world, and in the real world this is pretty good.
I agree with tomocox that no place is immune. But I strongly disagree that murder is tolerated in any sense of the word.
