I am very interested in checking out Louisville. Could you please elaborate on why you thought it was so great. Where do you currently live? Thanks.

I currently live outside of Seattle, WA. I like Louisville because it's a nice mix between Southern and Midwestern. Lots of brick houses, the Ohio River, very navigatable. I went to Lexington one day and was so annoyed with the traffic that I didn't even bother with the rest of the city. Louisville is bigger in population but is much easier to get around and more interesting with its different neighborhoods which each have their own flavor. Downtown is really wonderful with all the historic buildings that are still functional. Pretty laid back city and I ran into many people who moved to Louisville from elsewhere and love it. I also spent a good amount of time watching the local news and television to get a sense of what is going on. Where I currently live, the first 8 minutes of news are all about gangs, shootings, murders, burglaries, car wrecks, on and on..whereas I didn't see that when watching Louisville news. That's not to say that bad things don't happen but I felt safer there. The mayor seems fairly engaged in the community and there are alot of free offerings (Shakespeare in the Park etc) that many places don't offer. The riverfront park when it's finished will really be a great asset. I just think it's a city moving in the right direction.

Thanks so much for your post. I can't wait to check it out. I will also add, Seattle is one the coolest places I have ever seen. Loved that city!

I toured the neighborhoods thanks to Stx and then did my own investigation once I got the lay of the land...walked ALOT in the neighborhoods and streets to get a feel that you can't from a simple drive by. Talked to LOTS of locals, made a day trip to Madision, Indiana, quite possibly the most beautiful town I've ever seen, explored downtown, explored Southern Indiana, went to Frankfort and Midway, KY (cute town), went to Lexington and was pretty turned off by it. Spoke with the folks at the Kentuckiana Work Force there by JCTC...oh I could go on and on......It was a mix between investigation and exploration. I plan to return in the fall for a second visit. Employment might be an issue.....that will be the determining factor.

I live about an hour south of Seattle but I try to avoid it. I personally can't stand the place. I grew up in Chicago so I am more of a Midwest person and I lived in the South and fell in love with it. Washington is beautiful but living here is another story.
Anyway, best wishes on your search.

Downtown, Old Louisville, Cresent Hill, the Highlands, Germantown, Audubon Park, Butchertown, Deer Park, Cherokee Triangle, I know there are more and I'd have to look at my map but those are the ones that come to mind. I liked Cresent Hill alot and thought there might be some possiblities for Germantown as well. I'm working on a budget housewise so we'll see. On the Indy side I went to New Albany, Clarksville, Jeffersonville. I'm returning in Oct to narrow areas down, now that I know my way around a bit, so any new info, suggestions, tips, etc are always welcome.
