just got back from Louisville too!!
We just got back from louisville yesterday. We looked all over for houses and finally found one we just love!! It is, I believe in the buechel area, off of goldsmith ln. I was just wondering what you guys thought about the area.
I saw goldsmith elementary around the corner from the house and checked it out on great schools, it seems to be a pretty good school. I also noticed that we would be close to stores, restaurants, and things of that nature. So is the area pretty safe or should we keep looking? The street is shannon dr. and it seems to be pretty quiet and people seem to take pride in their homes and neighborhood. So tell me what you guys think.

It all depends on your viewpoints. 1st. If you have a specific address, you will want to check with Jefferson County Public Schools for your child's school assignment for next year and 2009-10 or you could be in for a big suprise.
The area is beginning to slip backwards. The area you speak of was the first major development area of Louisville following WWII, and it is now becoming a major rental homes area.
This is not to suggest that you would not be happy there, just so you can better judge the values of the homes in the area.

maji--
I also looked in Buechel--nice affordable houses, huh? But then I charted all the murders in Louisville in the last three years and grew concerned.
I think it was censusdata who provided that link in a previous thread. I'll see if I can find it for you.
That being said, natural geographic barriers can keep some of the problems from spreading to an area. And there seemed to be a difference between W. Buechel and Buechel -- Is that true?

Yes. It is not a rough area at all, but it represents post war, "inner ring" suburbia that is declining nationally as downtowns revive and development pushes to exurbs (see Oldham County). Generally, low rent apartments on Goldsmith Lane between Newburg and Bardstown Road have really brought the area down, and there have been a COUPLE murders in the past few years (not many). This coupled, with a large, barrier 10 lane freeway nearby, and it is not the best area. Still, head north On Bardstown past 264 and the area is upscale and wonderful. Even Gardiner lane, on the north side of 264 and Bardstown, is very nice.

There really isn't much residential in the West Buechel area. Much of the eastern areas seem pretty nice but not necessarily upper middle class towards Breckinridge Lane.
