What makes a downtown great isn't what's there for tourists---stuff like that 4th Street mall or an aquarium (God save us from them) or pre-fab "riverwalks" with corporate-funky chain resatuarants but what's down there for the people that actually live in the city.

And that's where Louisville falls flat and a city like Chicago shines. I'll tell ya what, most people in Chicago don't give a hoot if another tourist ever comes to town.

I was in Louisville today. The Highlands neighborhood was nice and the neighborhood north of the park was nice too. I see much to like in the city. But downtown? Eh. (shrugs)

We had a sandwich at a bagel shop on Frankfort Rd., picked up some coffee at Whole Foods and then looked at the TND out by the Costco. Precious.

" Lexington has had a major building added downtown since the mid 1980s, while Louisville's skyline in the same period went from being compared with Dayton to being compared with Nashville"

Nashville eh? Wow. Finally made the big time, eh?

TND? I am sure you have missed alot in Louisville, though. One really must know the city well. To compare Louisville to Chicago is laughable...Chicago kills Louisville in every regard. There is no comparison. However, Louisville is large enough to be a real live city with lots of diverse, walkable, vibrant urban neighborhoods. Also, no downtown is at its best on a Sunday when no major event is in town. Next time, try exploring more off the beaten path. You probably have not seen a fraction of the area yet...even downtown and Old Louisville wise.

Traditional neighborhood development. A subdivision that's planned more like an older suburb----houses close to sidewalk, large front porches, garages in back on alleys. Places to walk to with a "downtown" area with little shops and such.

The one we looked at yesterday is called Norton Commons. A mix of houses, condos and commercial. Kind'a cool but very pricey. They have a couple of the cutest little craftsman ranch houses you'll ever want to see. Lots of people looking there yesterday, more people than I've seen looking at houses in a LONG time. Lots of old-timers looking to downsize, like me.

Norton Commons is nice, but what Louisville really needs is sidewalks everywhere. I used to live at Hurstbourne Pky & LaGrange Road and HAD to walk half a mile to EP Sawyer Park because there was no sidewalks
